R5 2600 vs 2600x + motherboard + cooler

Hi there! :)

I have read articles and seen multiple videos about the ryzen processors, what I found out was that you could buy the r5 2600 rather than the x version and overclock it. The 2600 version is able to perform just as the ryzen 5 2600x when overclocked and even better sometimes. Is this true?

If so what motherboard and cooler should i pair up with the ryzen 5 2600.

I don't want the motherboard or the processor to overheat.

I plan on buying the MSI b450 tomohawk motherboard and the Artic Freezer 33 Esports one.

Is the MSI b450 tomohawk able to overclock without problems or should i try looking at different motherboard.

Same goes for the cooler.

Thanks for help! :)

Yes, you can overclock the 2600 so it outperforms a stock 2600x in most cases. And the MSI B450 Tomahawk from what I've seen, is a good motherboard for some decent overclocking. As for the cooler most decent air coolers should be fine, just gotta find the quiet ones ?. I like the Be Quiet! Dark Rock 4 but that can be out of some peoples budgets. I'll leave cooler recommendation to someone else as I'm not sure as to what coolers may be available on your area.

Main System: Ryzen 7 5800x | Asus Strix B550A | 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL14 | GTX 1080 | Fedora 36

Server: Ryzen 7 2700x | Asus Strix B450-F | 32GB DDR4 2400Mhz | GTX 1060 6GB | Unraid 6.10.3

Laptop: Intel i5 4200u | 12GB DDR3 1333Mhz | GT 740m | Windows 10

Mobile: iPhone 13 Mini | 128GB // Poco X3 NFC | 128GB

Yeah thats what thought, i am still worried by if the motherboard is good enough for moderate overclocking. I have to look into cooler also. The thing is that if i go with the 2600 i have enough money to buy rtx 2060. I just need to find a motherboard and a cooler which is sufficient. The prices in Norway is crazy high, compared to newegg and amazon.

Thanks for replying! :)

The artic freezer 33 from what i have seen is pretty quiet and performs well for the money.  420 kr which is almost 50 dollars.

Well I was able to overclock my Ryzen 7 2700x on an Asus Strix B450-F to 4.25ghz all core and it's, in my opinion, a worse board that the b450 Tomahawk, so I think you should be fine for that.

I looked up a quick review for it and it doesn't seem to have that bad performance, just a bit loud with 100% fan speed, which I doubt you'll get when your gaming. So it seems like a solid choice. But there might be better options but I'm not too familiar with Norway stores, from Australia ?

If it was only gaming a 2600 would be plenty since most games still barely utilise 6 cores. 2700 if you need the extra cores, I only got my 2700x because I got a killer deal on it.

Non-X version has a lower clock speed and TDP to the X version. So the X version is like a 2600 but with a small overclock on it.

Ryzen 5 2600: Base is 3.4Ghz; Boost is 3.9Ghz; 65W TDP

Ryzen 5 2600x: Base is 3.6Ghz; Boost is 4.2Ghz; 95W TDP

You can still overclock the 2600x some more but it's easier to let PBO2 (Precision Boost Overclocking 2) to do it's thing as it will pretty much push it to its max anyway.

And all good I don't mind haha.

When u overclock manually doesn’t it mess with the PBO2?

I have my 2600 overclocked to 4.2, on an Asrock Fatal1ty b450 mitx board using a Noctua NH-C14s in a Cougar QBX.

One thing to note is that while the stock cooler is not garbage, AMD did basically drop the non-X coolers by a tier on the 2000 series. You can overclock with it still, but the X has the better cooler bundled with it if you were not thinking of using a 3rd part cooler already.

It would depend on my budget and if I was willing to learn how to overclock, its not as hard as it seems as some boards have auto-overclock options by just selecting "Levels" of overclock, Levels 1-4, 4 being the highest overclock, but I would recommend level 3 as 4 IMO doesn't have that drastic of a change. If your budget allows you could go for the 2600x, but if you need to save some go for the 2600 and just one click overclock ?

I plan on buying a aftermarket cooler, as mention probably the artic freezer 33 esports one. Do you think the cooler will handle it temps?

If i go for the x version what are the benefits for overclocking with it rather than the 2600?

From what I've seen it should be able to. It's just a bit noisy at full load is all.

With the X version you probably won't need to overclock, only if you want that extra sliver of performance. It's basically just plug-and-play.

Yeah, I'd just like to put in my two cents worth here:

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $148.99 @ SuperBiiz
CPU Cooler Cooler Master - Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler $33.99 @ Amazon
Motherboard ASRock - B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $59.99 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total (before mail-in rebates) $252.97
  Mail-in rebates -$10.00
  Total $242.97

Yes, the motherboard isn't the tomahawk. That's because for most people, unless you are a hardcore enthusiast, it really doesn't make too much of a difference, and it's not like the pro4 VRMs are bad still. I also got the 212 black because it's great value, the freezer ones are nice, but it would be better if you found them at around the $30-35 mark, as $40 doesn't seem worth it in my opinion. If you have a bit more money to spend on cooling, I would get the dark rock slim, which is around $60, but offers solid cooling for it's price, and, it's also able to fit inside ITX cases iirc, so if you ever make an ITX build down the line, cooking's one less thing to worry about.

I see ur point but here in Norway the cheapest dark rock slim is 750 nok or 88 dollars while the artic freezer 33 is 420 nok or about 50 dollars. Btw the cm hyper 212 black edt is about the same price as the artic freezer.

i would rather buy the dark rock 4 rather than the dark rock slim for 12 dollars more 850 nok.
