Hi everyone !

I bought on eBay a i5 6400 and was willing to pair it with my old Asus Maximus VIII Gene to use it.

However, when I boot, the Q Code displays 04 or 22 when I launch in Safe Mode.

I tried one memory stick on each slot (tried with both of my sticks), clear CMOS (with the button and by removing the battery), flashing the bios on the versions 0701, 3504 and 3801.

All my tests were outside of a case with only the PSU (EPS and 24-pin only).

Does anyone has an idea to help me troubleshoot ?

Current Configuration : i5 6400, Maximus VIII Gene, Akasa 850W 80+ Gold PSU. (edit) and GSkill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 CL16-16-16-36 2x8Go.

Thanks in advance.

Look in the manual for what those codes mean.  It could be anything, like a botched CPU or botched RAM slots etc...

Seeing other posts on forums, it seems to be a PSU issue. Have you just tried your Akasa 850W or multiple PSUs?

Let's see:

04 - PCH Initialization before microcode loading

22 does not have a description but falls in-between:

19 ~ 1C - Pre-memory PCH initialization is started

&

2B ~ 2F - Memory Initialization

Assuming the board initializes in a linear fashion it's assumable that 22 is probably RAM related. Don't take my word for it though.

I didn't try another PSU, I don't have another one yet. But I had to buy another one for a pc so I will try it, I'll come back when I have it.

My ram is ok, i used it on my main pc with this motherboard and it worked just fine. I saw the code meanings but the "PCH Initialisation" is too cryptic for me.

If you have another test to ensure if it is RAM related, I would be glad to try.

By the way, the ram can be configured with XMP, is there any incompatibilities between XMP and non-K processors ?

Furthermore, the motherboard was used previously with an i7 6700K. Could it be remaining data or parameters from this processor even after a Clear CMOS ?

Thanks for all of your answers !
