What happened to PCI drives?

there are still cards that go straight into a 4x/8x/16x PCIe slot but more commonly you get a M.2 to PCIe adapter card and just any M.2 drive you want

Hi,

I'm not sure which motherboard to choose between the MSI Tomahawk and the Mortar since they would cost me roughly the same. The Mortar would be €5 cheaper but has apparently slightly worse VRM's / MOSFET but most importantly, it has 2 m.2 slots while the Tomahawk has only one, although it has more fan headers.

Now if I were to get the Tomahawk, how could I install a second (non-SATA) SSD? I remember a few years ago Linus reviewed a Intel PCI-E SSD that would actually go into a PCI-E port. However I can't find any of these online. Are they still a thing? Or is it possible to have some kind of m.2 to PCI adaptor? Is it even worth it?

Thanks

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler
