hello,

at first i say you some specs:

rx vega 56 (undervolted but working fine)

intel xeon x5650 @4.00ghz

ddr3 12gb 1600mhz (oc from 1200mhz, dont know the specific name)

asus p6t

144hz fullhd freesync monitor (if it cares)

i get alot of spikes when i play some games, the best example is at the moment Path of Exile:

when i play this game i get 150-190 fps where nothing happens, when i engage a fight i drop around to 50-120,

at the same time my gpu is 60% usage and my cpu is around 40%, so i think the only think that bottlenecking and causes the fps drops is my 1600mhz ram or?

and something other crazy happens: i read the usage from task-manager and rivatuner, everytime when i open task-manager the games runs much smoother for some minutes, after some minutes it drops again.

im pretty sure this specs should run games @fullhd 144hz easily.

what i tried so far:

lowering the settings

enable/disable freesync

setting framerate limit in rivatuner

setting the priority for games higher in task-manager

turn off programs i dont need so just the important things are running

i am very thankful for every help!

What software are you using to measure usage? Whole CPU usage might be 40% but that may well be 2 cores pegged at max while the other 4 can't do much. What happens when you increase your graphics settings? Does performance get more consistent?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

i am using the rivatuner for reading the usage.

all cpu cores does not go over 75% usage, just tried what you say. (gpu same, not goes over 80%)

and yes, i feel like the performance get more consistens when i higher the settings. (thanks for the tip :))

Westmere is a pretty old architecture and I wouldn't be surprised if the single core performance is what's holding it back.

I would have to agree, The CPU architecture is getting rather old and at stock clocks the IPC is really low considering its a server processor. The overclock is probably helping since in a perfect world it would give you about a 35% boost in IPC but in reality you're probably getting close too 20%. On top of the fact that if its a DirectX 11 game then AMD cards are known to have higher driver overhead. AMD cards with DX12 though should alleviate some of the bottleneck though.I have too say though having had an old Ivy Bridge Xeon a year or two back and experienced this myself the only sure fire way to alleviate the bottleneck is to upgrade the mobo/cpu or deal with it and enjoy games that leverage multi threading more sadly.

so i can just solve this problem by upgrading my cpu?

same of my problems in Mordhau, gpu is at around 85% and all cpu cores max peak was 80%.

should i wait for the upcoming ryzen 3000 series or buying a used ryzen 2700?

ryzen 3600
