So I have a Sony A7R II and I record a lot of video for things like weddings and other events that people hire me for.

I also like to record video whilst site seeing but I only record in 1080P

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU but I'm not sure what to buy,

I want to be able to edit 4K Video in Adobe Premiere Pro but I also like to play a few games.

I want to choose out of two:

NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB

or

AMD RX 580 8GB

My PC at the moment has the following specs

CPU: Intel Core I7-4790K

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1600

Motherboard: ASUS Q87M-E

PSU: Aerocool Integrator 600W

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1050TTI 4GB

I know that the 1060 is a bit better for gaming but i really want better editing performance.

I also know that CUDA is good for Premiere and thats its only on NVIDIA

But the AMD has 2GB more VRAM So please help me out with deciding my GPU

Much Appreciated

System

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

Case: Phanteks eclipse P400A

Motherboard: MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WiFi

GPU: MSI RTX 3060 TI Gaming X Trio

RAM: 16GB XPG D60G CL16 3200MHZ

PSU: Sharkoon SilentStorm Cool Zero 650W

Storage: Crucial P2 1TB

I would go for the rx580 just cause its cheaper than the 1060 at some stores, and im sure that 2gb more vram is going to help out that editing quite a bit.

Everything i'm reading on the subject (one example) seems to indicate that having those CUDA cores that Premier Pro loves so much is better than the extra 2gb of VRAM.

I can't give you personal experience on the matter here, though, as I have none. I edit videos so infrequently, that I believe the last time I opened up Premier was three or four years ago.

It's also garbage at hardware acceleration on Premiere Pro and will get rekt by the 1060 regardless of VRAM.

If one wants AMD video card for video editing hardware acceleration they should use Vegas Pro instead as it has a much better OpenCL support.

OP: The GTX 1660 exists you know? it's the new GTX 1060 should be found within the same price range.

or Da Vinci resolve.

how long are your projects? if they are rather long >> RX580/RX590

i would recommend that you wait to the release of Navi in July.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2018-NVIDIA-GeForce-vs-AMD-Radeon-Vega-1206/

For any content creators, it's important to refer to Puget Systems' benchmarks.

This shows that the GTX 1060 is overall better for Adobe Premiere Pro.

it even beats out the Vega 64.

Honestly though, I wouldn't consider the jump from a GTX 1050 ti to a GTX 1060 even worth it at this point.

I would recommend going with an RTX 2060 or a GTX 1660ti:

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2019-AMD-Radeon-VII-vs-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-1395/

You'll get significantly better gaming performance and you'll also get a bit more oomph in Adobe Premiere Pro for live rendering.

It's worth mentioning that the new NVENC in the Turing graphics cards will also produce higher quality video, so that'll benefit you when using hardware acceleration to help trim down render times.

Also, just be prepared that your render times will not be that great with your current CPU.

Really, I would even consider starting to save up to go for a Ryzen 3000 build.

One of my best friends does a ton of 4K content creation with a Ryzen 7 2700X and a GTX 1060 3GB.

His only challenge now is that Adobe After Effects is gobbling up his 16GB of RAM. We are saving up to bump up to 64GB as that's what you really want for content creation at that level.
