Troubleshooting PC (pls help)

hello i made a pleb build about 4 years back. Intel Core i3-6100, EVGA GTX 1060, Gigabyte H110M-A motherboard, 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 RAM, 1TB WD Blue Hard Drive, 500W EVGA Power Supply, and a thermal take case. this cost about 600 dollars and was my first build and I was on a budget. recently i decided to upgrade because my stuff was outdated and an i3 wasn't cutting it at all. so i bought a MSI Z390-A PRO LGA1151 (Intel 8th and 9th Gen) Motherboard, an i7-7700 processor, cooler master 212 evo (ofc), 8 more gigs of the same type of ram, and a corsair 850w power supply. overall this cost about 700 in upgrades. i recently put the whole thing together and when i went to turn it on fans spun and a light flashed for about 1 second then it instantly shut off... the light that did flash was on my motherboard and was labeled CPU is it possible that i bought a defective CPU or could something else be the problem? any answers would be appreciated

This processor is not supported by that motherboard.

well for one thing, if i'm understanding correctly, you are using a 8/9th gen mobo with a 7th gen cpu?

while the sockets are the same, i'm pretty sure intel changed the pin layout or something, making them incompatible

When I upgraded my pc I put a thing that looked like a fan header from the power supply on the mobo and it had the same thing. Try that maybe?
