recently Intel locked bclk overclocking on coffelake by blocking booting once bclk goes further than 12.98, however I don't know how they did that (through newer archeticture or newer 300 series chipset)

skylake overclocking was possible with old 100 series and I dont know if there was motherboards with 200 chipset which can do it with older bios tho.

I want to know if the locking process is being done by the cpu itself or by the motherboard new 300 chips.

the reason fir this Q is that I am trying to find a way ariund this to overclock non k coffelake CPUs with older chips, however I know that the older chips comes along with LGA 1150 v1 but some people showed that coffelake could also work on some older motherboards, so before I go for that motherboard I need to know if the bclk overclocking block is done on the motherboard chip or on the cpu itself

Pretty sure it's the CPU itself, and I would most definitely not go with an older motherboard if you want to do an 8th or 9th gen CPU. They have had some that work with a modded bios but it's not for constant everyday use, most were just tested to see if it was possible. If you plan on keeping and using this computer for a while buy a 300 series board, I personally wouldn't risk it.

Main Desktop: CPU - i9-14900k | Mobo - Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX | GPU - PNY Gaming OC RTX 5080 16GB RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 64GB 6400mhz | AIO - Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360mm | PSU - Corsair RM1000X | Case - Hyte Y40 - White | Storage - Samsung 980 Pro 1TB Nvme /  Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 4TB Nvme / Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB Nvme / Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SSD / Samsung 870 QVO 2TB SSD/ Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD|

there is no benficial purpose for using, I already have a mix of 300 series motherbaords from different brands, but I am doing this just for fun, I wanted to overclock the non overclockable intel coffelake no more, not for using purposes, but it seems disapointing to find that there is no way since the CPU itself locked.

I think intel did that locking for marketing purposes because any I5-8400 is capable of delivering up to 5.2 GHz, i7 also capable, even I3-8100 should be able to get arround 5.3 GHz boost.

no matter how Ryzen is great, it is simply can't be overclocked as good as intel ones
