Hey guys, after getting a compatible motherboard for my i7 6700K, I am having troubling with booting it up.

I am currently using the ASUS PRIME  Z270-A  and when I boot it up I get a No Signal on my working monitor, I have tried this with and without the GPU plugged in.

I am booting it with everything in except the SSD which I believe you do not need as it will just go to the BIOS (however mine doesn't as it does not POST)

The following steps I have already done:-

  • Gradually removed hardware until it goes to the bare minimum
  • Used different RAM slot configurations
  • Removed CMOS battery and replaced it
  • Tried a different HDMI cable

I read online that it could be a BIOS firmware version issue as sometimes it can be shipped with 0501 instead of the compatible version for the 6700K 0901, I have looked everywhere on the internet to see where I can locate the shipped BIOS firmware version and it is apparently on a sticker above the DIM slots however I dont have either of these numbers.

I would try and flash the BIOS however I would not know how to do this if I cant get it to the BIOS.

Any advice or steps to take would be appreciated at this point I'm willing to try anything that could make it work.

Thanks

The ASUS website will have the latest firmware and bios, and the manual that tells you how to flash it. Some motherboards allowing booting into the bios without a CPU, others don't.

I dont believe my MB allows me to do this, is there anything else I could do?

The RGB backlight shows aswell as a green LED, I'm not sure if this is a sign that my mobo and PSU is fine, I hope so as these are new parts.

Read the manual to double check. If there is no way to flash without a supported CPU, then you (at least temporarily) need a supported CPU.

Double check everything, I am usually wrong.

It supports EZ Flash 3 however you have to be able to get an actual signal to be able to do it if I am understanding it correctly, do you think if I flash it via USB it could solve the No Signal problem. It is a bit of a risk as if it is unsuccessful I could brick the MB

@partians @TeenTesla

Z270 should support the i7-6700K out-of-the-box.

Z270 was released together WITH the Intel Core-i 7000 series -- which was a refresh of the 6000 series.

Z170 released with the Core-i 6000 series.

What kind of symptoms are you getting?

Is power cutting on and off, looping?

'EZFlash' is not the feature that allows you to update the BIOS without a CPU.

What you want is 'USB BIOS Flashback' ... that is usually only reserved for higher-end ASUS motherboards (e.g. Maximus / Rampage / Crosshair / Deluxe).

Even STriX tier motherboards don't have this feature.

Hey Rascal, thanks for the in depth reply.

So currently, i turn it on via the PSU and have the HDMI connected to the IGFX as I only have a 750ti spare, the aura lights come on (RGB backlight) and a green LED at the top right of the MB shows then I push tbe power button and the fans spin and my monitor just shows No Signal, the monitor does work as I use it every day.

My RAM is ths Corsair Vengence DDR4 2400MHz which is compatible with the MB.

The fans spin, but nothing comes up on screen?

Does the system automatically...power cycle (e.g. powers on and off), and tries again?

Have, or were you able, to test the RAM to make sure it is not faulty?

If you have a two-stick RAM kit, try with either one of the sticks -- this would rule out the possibility of a faulty RAM module.

Of course, double check your power connections, and make sure they are properly connected / not loose

  • 24-pin power to the motherboard
  • 8-pin CPU / EPS connection to the motherboard (top-left)
  • (I'm guessing the GTX 750 Ti is not installed...but IF it is, check the 6/8-pin power connection....if applicable)
  • Make sure the CPU cooler's fan is connected to a CPU_Fan header
  • Make sure CPU cooler is properly mounted

Also, do you have the motherboard box.

If my memory is correct, it should say what version the BIOS the motherboard was shipped with -- check the barcode labels on the outside of the packaging.

Hey,

No power cycle the fans just spin as if the PC was working I left it on for five minutes waiting for any loop to happen but no joy, monitor jusy has amber standby light at all times, I have checked all four sticks of RAM in each slot and that still did not solve the issue

All cables are placed properly often hesting an audible click when I slot them in.

I have changed my monitor to a 4k one that accepts DP to DP and DP to DVI, I am currently testing with the DVI slot and still the same situation

Please refer to the screenshot for the box barcode, thanks.

Checked my ASUS X99 Deluxe II motherboard, and Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master...neither of them have any BIOS version indicator on the box, or a sticker on the motherboard.

Like I said before, since the i7-6700K was already supported since on the Z170 variant motherboards, it should be supported right out-of-the-box on a Z270 motherboard.

Just to clarify, did you try JUST 1 out of 4 sticks just to rule out faulty RAM?

Was this an used motherboard, or brand new?

Next step would be to take the CPU cooler off.

1) Check if the CPU was mounted properly.

Remove the CPU from the socket.

2) Use a flashlight...and maybe a magnifying glass...and check for ANY bent CPU socket pins.

EVEN one can cause POST/boot problems.

I was helping a friend troubleshooting a no POST/boot problem on a i5-7600K and Z270 combo he got from a co-worker back in April.

The AsRock board that came with the CPU ended being dead, and he ordered a replacement Gigabyte motherboard.

System would not POST with new motherboard.

Swapped out RAM (with a working set from my system), another PSU, video card, different monitors + cables, etc.

Checked the CPU for damage, checked CPU cooler mount, and thermal paste.

Finally decided to check the CPU socket before giving up.

Sure enough...a SINGLE CPU socket pin along the bottom edge was BENT 180* .

( Gave my friend a warning: Intel socket pins are fragile, if it breaks while trying to fix it, then RIP...pins are known to break when trying to fix them. )

Lucky enough to straighten it out with tweezers + sewing needle.

Put CPU back into socket, system POST + boots.

With all this said, IF you/we are unable to troubleshoot this, you might need to bring it into a local PC shop.

They should be able to have spare parts to troubleshoot if it is a CPU / motherboard / RAM problem.

We won't be able to determine that, unless you have an extra set of compatible Z270 CPU + motherboard .... which not many people do.

Hey bud,

I tried to use one stick at a time using a different DIM slot each time and still no POST, this motherboard is brand new with every other item on this system.

I have tried to reseat the CPU and I did check but could not find any faulty pins at all please review the images provided

The CPU doesnt get hot at all (not sure if this is because it's not posting.

When testing if USB works, it does. The lights on my headset turn on (is this promising)?

I did strip the mobo down and tried to do a process of elimination, I had all necessary cables plugged in (24 pin, 8 pin and I even tried different inputs such as DP, Hdmi and DVI) and still nothing.

I checked to see if the PSU was faulty by using the jumper, changed cables and even added a SSD just incase.

I did realise that I installed the Mobo without stand off pins but I believe the Corsair Obsidian 750D already has stand offs as the motherboard or case didn't come with any stand off screws.

I am genuinely lost for words for what I can do now.

I just looked at the pictures of the CPU socket that you uploaded.

I would also check the bottom side of the CPU (e.g. the metal contact pads) or any thermal paste, signs of shorting, burnt spots, missing components, etc.

USB headset turns on only really means the motherboard is getting power.

At least, that is something we know...

Yes, it would make sense the CPU is cool, as it is not POSTing.

Yes, the Corsair 750D has the stand-offs integrated into the case, BUT you still need to use the included screws to screw the motherboard down ONTO the stand-offs.

I used the 8 black screws without metal washers to hold the mobo in place, I did not get any stand offs included in the box.

Thanks

Okay, so the stand-offs are properly installed then.

Correct, there should not be washers.

I'm saying there is some sort of contaminate (e.g. piece of hair, string, metal strand ?? ) in between the CPU pins.

That is NOT supposed to be there.

That is a great eye, could a strand of hair really make an impact so hugely?

I will remove the hair or whatever it is.

Do you think I should change my RAM to this as I have 2400MHz and would be purchasing 3000MHz or would this RAM not affect it as both are compatible?

Do you think I should change my RAM to this as I have 2400MHz and would be purchasing 3000MHz or would this RAM not affect it as both are compatible?

It depends on what that "contaminate" is.

If it's shorting some of the pins together, or making it so some of the pins are not properly contacting the metal pads on the bottom of the CPU, then yes.

We don't know if that damage the CPU and/or motherboard when you tried to power it on for the first time.

You'll see some performance gain with fast RAM, but it's not going to be a night-and-day gain.

As along as it is DDR4 RAM, it will be compatible with your CPU and motherboard.

Hey, I have attached a photo of the CPU (back) to see if you can find anything wrong with it.

I am going to be asking for a replacement FROM Amazon to the board.

Thanks

DUDE.

Are you sure it is a i7-6700K??!

Where did you buy that CPU from?

Did you get scammed?

That is NOT how the bottom side of a i7-6700K looks like!

THIS is how a i7-6700K should look like:

Image result for i7-6700K bottom

It should have i7-6700K

stamped right on the top of the CPU heatsink:

Intel Core i7-6700K CPU

Those round contact pads, AND so few of them, looks ALOT like a Intel Core 2 Duo / Intel Core 2 Quad  from like 2008 ~ 2009.

Below is a picture of an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

Oh god no, I hope not.

Upon looking at Google, it seems that the CPUs do not match whatsoevere, the writing on the CPU is a little faded, either by the thermal paste from my CPU cooler or by wear and tear (previous owners) but it is difficult to read.

This is the item information (seller is provided there) looks like they sold and fulfilled the item, I would like to get the 6700K however the seller is known for putting old CPUs inside newer CPU packaging (reviews)

If this is the case, this explains all of the issues I am having with the boot.

Do you recommend any other CPU that is compatible with the Z270-A

It looks like there was some good ol' Tom Foolery going on, and you got caught up in it.

Hold on, it says "JTC Computer Store" is FULFILLED BY AMAZON...so you should be able to get a refund.

Get a hold of Amazon, as soon as possible.

You might be able to get out of this one alive.

It looks like maybe a previous buyer did a bait-and-switch refund (e.g. kept the REAL i7-6700K, and refunded it back to Amazon / JTC with an old CPU).

You can buy a i7-6700K ... ACTUAL one this time.

Other options to consider would be:

  • i5-6600K (4-cores, 4-threads)
  • i5-7600K (4-cores, 4-threads)
  • i7-7700K ((4-cores, 8-threads, just like the 6700K)

Not worthwhile to get an i3 CPU from the 6th and 7th generation, OR a locked, non-K, i5 / i7 CPU with your Z270 motherboard.

Surprised you were able to put the CPU into the motherboard socket...at all...AND not damage / break off any pins.

Socket LGA 775 (what that CPU looks like) is waaaay different from LGA 1151 (which is what your motherboard uses).

Keep in mind Intel 8000 and 9000 series is also LGA 1151 socket, but is NOT compatible with Z270 motherboards.

You will need Z370 or Z390.

(LGA 1151 ver1 ... versus ... LGA 1151 ver2 if you will)

Hey mate, we're nearly at the finishing line!

I decided to go for the i7-7700K, bit more expensive but seems a bit better and it's compatible.

In regards to Amazon, they were being a bit difficult at the start until I linked them with the resellers recent reviews where other people have fell victim to it,

I don't think it's customer doing the old swap-a-roo more like the company are shady, either way they are getting investigated thoroughly and I am getting a refund once my parcel has been collected.

In regards to the motherboard, I had to get that replaced as when I took it to get that pesky hair (I need to be way more careful, I seem to shed like a cat) it looked like one of the pins had just snapped off when i released the CPU clip but that is being replaced and another will be delivered tomorrow (or Saturday alongside with my GPU) and then hopefully, fingers crossed, touch wood and a pray to God, I can be uo and running.

I appreciate all of the help buddy, you've been a patient saint and an asset to the LTT forum!

That's some good news.

Usually...Amazon is pretty good, but their low tier customer service reps can be a little...stubborn -- happened to my friend recently when Amazon duplicated his order.

This switch-a-roo has been happening for a while with both AMD Ryzen and Intel CPUs.

People will buy a brand-new CPU from Amazon / NewEgg, they take the real CPU out, keep it, and put in a random garbage CPU back into the box.

Then request a refund, say it was sealed and unopened (e.g. they put on a new Intel seal that they bought from China eBay), and Amazon / NewEgg will take it back.

Arrives back at Amazon, they look at it for 1/2 a second, sees the "untampered" seal, and puts it back on the warehouse shelf as brand-new.

Happens with motherboards, too.

That said, if the seller / company is the one who is doing it, then that's a different story.

They usually blame bent pins on user error (e.g. motherboard manufacturers, I'm looking at you ?), so that's a relief you are able to get a replacement hassle-free.

Hey bud, I come back bearing good news.

My i7-7700K arrived today (it actually is an i7-7700K this time) and I have got everything hooked up and it is working like a dream, the speed different compared to my old system is night and day.

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for your patience again, you're an absolute hero!

Check your messages - could have a little reward for you.

Thanks <3
