So I've put in an order for a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290.

What would be a good case recommendation for this long video card that will have good aesthetics as well?

NZXT Switch 810....versatility at its finest.

Another nice case.  I'm kinda leaning a little bit towards the Fractal cases at the moment.

Given the GPU is around 305mm, do people think its better to get the smaller Fractal Design R4 and take out the top hard drive bays, vs getting something like a Fractal Design XL R2 and leave them in?  I realise that some people think the airflow in the Design isn't as good as say the Arc series so that is also a consideration to take into account.

Air flow is better with drive cages removed.

Have you looked at the Nanoxia Deep Silence series of cases?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Usually form factor does make a difference in what your going to be using. What size form factor are you going to be using?
