i have a x99x killer mobo and a 5820k. Before i upgraded my ram from 2400mhz to 3000mhz i can easily set the optimized cpu oc 4.2ghz profile in bios and be done. But with the new 3000mhz in order to get that speed it seems turning on xmp causes my cpu speed to jump up to 5+ghz with blck speed from 100mhz to 125mhz.

Im not sure if this right but if i pick the optimized 4.2ghz profile in bios and not turn on xmp just increasing the dram frequency to 3200mhz( no 3000mhz option , 2666mhz and 3200mhz gap) it doesnt seem to effect the cpu oc settings.

that's normal if your board doesn't have control for 1.00x and 1.33x memory ratio.

that will most likely give you terrible memory timings, better enter those yourself as well

x99 needs blck to get 3000Mhz+ on ram.

you'll need to reduce your CPU multiplier

with that said, i'd be really surprised if you notice any performance gains with the 3000mhz ram over the 2400mhz

2400 quad channel = 4800 dual channel

post up some benchmarks to confirm you see performance gains.

also 4.2ghz is a little bit low. most people can hit 4.4ghz.

First time when i went into bios after installing the new ram, i did the usual like before ram upgrade picked the oc profile didnt realize with ram oc at 3000mhz my cpu blck speed increased causing cpu to be at 5.5ghz. When the computer boot up there were no display or keyboard/mouse light. Did i do any damage to my cpu or computer in general?

im new to this , even though this mobo has quad channel im only using 2 ram sticks. On youtube i see 5-10% fps increase in game performance with 2400 vs 3000mhz. Am i wrong?

default mobo speed is running the new 3000 mhz ram at 2400mhz but when i checked the specs in cpuz its telling me its still using 1.36v at 16-16-16-39 timing. Why is voltage still high running only 2490mhz? my old stick at 2400mhz only used 1.25v. Also on paper timing suppose to be 15, is it because the 2400mhz its running at?

yes.

4x2400mhz (9600Mhz total) sticks will be faster than 2x3000 sticks (6000Mhz total).

different ram sticks clock different

i really like the cheap/old crucial/micro ddr4 2400 or 2666 kits.

I run my sticks 8x4GB 2400CL13 @ 1.3v. I might be able to reduce the timings more.

This is the kit I got on eBay a few days ago.

less than 70 USD for 16Gb and really good on quad channel mobo.

thats what i use, both old(2x4gb, 2.4k mhz) and new(2x8gb, 3k mhz) ram are crucial ballistix sport by micron

no damage, just no stability.

thanks

so after messing around with the bios oc preset settings more, i noticed if i just turn on a setting called cpu turbo boost and ram xmp on/off without touching anything else. It automatically puts cpu at 4ghz, 3ghz cache, 125mhz blck speed and ram at 3000mhz.

Does this sound right? what else should i check?

voltages. Make sure VCCIN (CPU input voltage) doesnt go past 2V (unnecessary), Vcore (CPU core voltage) below 1.4V (can degrade CPUs a bit too quickly) and core temperature in check

The X99 platform need to use 125 MHz CPU Base Clock...from what I know, when using DDR4-3000 MHz or above.

I had asked this exact same question back in... 2017 ? when I got my ASUS X99 Deluxe II and i7-6800K.

See here:

Don't remember if this was true or not, but given X99 was on the Haswell-E and Broadwell-E architecture, they were not capable to running such high DRAM speeds while maintaining a 100 MHZ CPU Base Clock.

Assuming timings are identical, DDR4-3000 MHz SHOULD be faster than DDR4-2400 MHz.
