Is it better

Go to solution Solved by Crunchy Dragon,

That's gonna be a massive upgrade over the FX system.

My dad says that it won’t make much of a difference. Will it? You can check my current specs in my signature

You could also wait a few days and find out when the ryzen 3000 launches. Might be able to get more cores and clocks for the same price in a month or less.

Please don't buy 2400mhz for a Ryzen system.. Go at least 3000mhz-3200mhz.. And then yes, the performance difference will be day and night..

You don't need 3000+Mhz memory for Ryzen, I do just fine with even 2133.

With Zen 2 that gets obsoleted anyway

Hardware doesn't become automatically obsolete when something newer launches...

I also have a GTX 780 that's still kicking and is actually pretty good for 1080p gaming. Even old CPUs like the 3770K are still viable options.

I haven't seen anyone here recommend less than 3000mhz RAM for Ryzen systems so why start now? He's not trying to see if 2400mhz will work because he already owns it so why not spend what is it maybe $10 more and just get decent RAM..

He's trying to upgrade and if it's in the budget, I would maximize performance.. I don't think the cost is enough to justify going with 2400mhz.. It's just too cheap to do it right is all I'm saying.. I mean, you don't even need dual channel so save 5 bucks and get a 16gb stick instead of 2x8gb..

Every little thing you do for your system adds up..

I mean that you can manually set the infinity fabric speed with Zen 2 CPUs in BIOS (which is literally why good RAM is so important).

Yh it’s literally like £4 to get 3000mhz so why not, also I read dual channel was better than single, is that not true?

Dual Channel is better, I was making a point about saving money..

Infinity Fabric like mentioned above runs at the frequency of your RAM, so having a higher speed WILL increase performance.. Whether that's noticeable for everyone is the question.. I believe my system get's higher FPS during gameplay with my RAM (b die) compared to 2400mhz.. There's plenty of videos on it..

I'd get this though:

You can still upgrade to Zen 2 later, plus a 1TB NVMe SSD.

Dual Channel is more important than the frequency so make sure you get 2 sticks no matter what.. I would aim for 3000+mhz memory..

Did you edit the original post because I could have sworn it said 2400mhz RAM.. Now it says 3000mhz when I look at it lol..

I don’t really need that as I already have 2x 500gb ssds, just haven’t installed them yet. Also I defo want 16gb ram

It looks like you only have HDDs in your sig lol so they probably weren't certain.. But ya, just get the 2600.. I'm using it now at 4.1ghz and I've had the 2600X as well and can't tell the difference.. It's a great CPU and you shouldn't need to upgrade to Zen 2 unless you want to later down the road, but then there will probably be more options.. The 2600 is a beast for the price it sells for.. Miles ahead of your current setup..
