Bottlenecked

Everyone hates bottlenecks. It’s a common question on our forums to ask whether a part will be a bottleneck… But what does a bottleneck even look like, and how can you avoid one?

Hi everyone! I am some what new to PC gaming (finally switched from console about a year or two ago) and I recently bought a new gaming rig and was wondering if I was bottlenecking either my CPU or my GPU.

My stock IBUYPOWER system comes with:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/ibuypower-gaming-desktop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-1tb-solid-state-drive-black-gray/6292003.p?skuId=6292003

Z370 IB-R motherboard

DDR4 16gb 2666mhz

RTX 2080

I7 8700k

1TB SSD

-----------

The only "upgrade" ive done to it was kind of reluctantly buying 32gb of Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3200mhz RAM. My question is am I even benefiting from the ram upgrade. Every single post on the internet says 16gb is enough for gaming... but.. the RGB PRO ram just looks too appealing.

It was kind of pricey too :/ I'm still within the two week return period and would really appreciate some advise.

Thank you all in advanced!

More RAM never hurts.

I personally could use 32. On 16. It depends on what you do, really.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Check your RAM usage when you have your games on, I highly doubt 32GB is even being half-utilized unless you have tons of background apps running when you game

If you have tons of background apps running I think you will feel it anyway, as the CPU performance will suffer first

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600  Heatsink: ID-Cooling Frostflow X GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 Mini 6GB RAM: KLEVV Bolt 3600Mhz (2x8GB) Mobo: ASUS B550-F ROG Strix (Wifi)  Case: Fractal Design Meshify C PSU: Deepcool DQ-M-V2L

I rarely have multiple things open while I game. I was just wondering if it would give you any advantages vs 16gb (for like screen tare and overall performance)

If you're those people that can't be arsed closing tabs in Chrome I suppose there is a use case for 32GB

For gaming, no I don't think you're gonna notice any difference

*screen tear

If your ram is in dual channel already, no, 32gb will not do a goddamn thing. As someone with 48GB of RAM, I can say that past 16gb, more RAM does jack shit.

The only thing I noticed is that Windows now has adequate resources to do its thing without affecting system performance - on boot without anything running I'm idling at 3.4gb, Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.

Sorry about my spelling sometimes. My $1200 laptop has a $2 keyboard.

I idle at the same. RAM usage when actually doing things has gone as high as ~12-13GB.

you're probably not using a light, customized server OS like I am though.

Enterprise is just consumer with extra business features. B7601's kernel is a lot lighter and I've changed the performance profile for background tasks  - which allocates more RAM for system processes. The more RAM Windows has to do its own thing, the less of an impact Windows' idle processes will have on overall system performance.

My machine performs roughly 15% slower on 2GB of RAM than it does on 8, and it boots faster  on 16GB than it does on 8.

RAM is no joke and most people don't realize that upping their memory frequency and lowering their timings can have a huge impact on performance.

I was running 32GB (4x8gb) DDR3 1866MHz, 11-11-11-28-2T  until semi recently. I now run 48GB, 4x 8gb and 4x 4gb at 9-9-9-24-2T 1600MHz. I can honestly say that the lower latency is far more important than the extra 266MHz, especially for VM performance since so much is being done within the RAM itself.

Sorry about my spelling sometimes. My $1200 laptop has a $2 keyboard.
