Booting through laptop's dvd driver

My laptop only has 500GB HDD, my plan is to use my brand new SSD as a primary boot drive. Will I be able to utilize the full speed of the SSD (860 Evo) if I connect it via SATA caddy? Because the only SATA port in my laptop is populated by my 500GB HDD. Is there any speed limitation if I connected the SSD this way?
