New Speakers

I'm looking for a good set of speakers for my computer-desk-setup-thing and I have no idea what I should be looking for. I would like a reasonably priced ($50-$200) set of speakers that are of good quality in construction and sound.

 

I had an old three-piece stereo system by Sony that my grandparents gave me which was actually quite good. I managed to connect it to my computer using an RCA audio to 3.5mm aux cable. Unfortunately, I went away from home to college for a few seasons and by the time I came back my mother had given this old set to Goodwill.

 

I am now a sad speakerless individual. Any help with my search would be appreciated.

Are you looking for just a 2 channel setup? Surround sound?

 

Do you want speakers or monitors.

 

Speakers will color sound while monitors will have a flatter response and more true reproduction. Pros and cons to both depending on the use case.

 

What is the primary use of the speakers? What do you listen to on your computer?

I have a Creative set of 5.1 with Subwoofer, i paid around £80 for them about 6 years ago and they r clear and crisp.

I know very little about speakers and how they function. I listen to a butt ton of music. Take that as you will. I also play video games like Battlefield 4 and Apex Legends. So some bass would be appreciated to make those gunshots and explosions better. I do some audio and video editing for my church but that will most likely be done using headphones.

I have been more than pleased with going from a Logitech 5.1 system to the Mackie 2.0 system.  I don't miss any of the lower frequencies while gaming or listening to music, while the mids and highs are much clearer at louder volumes.

 

I have a Deon/Mirage setup for my living room and don't turn that on as much to listen to music as I used to.

Yeah, I'm not necessarily looking for a living room set up. A 2.1 audio system is sort of what I'm looking for (the old set from my grandparents was a 2.1 setup), though, if you think any other speaker configuration is superior I'm all ears.

My brother has the Logitech Z313 Speaker System (about $35 on sale at Amazon). I think it's pretty acceptable for a speaker system. Though, I could go higher on the price spectrum; what do you guys think?

For $35, it is what it is.  2 speakers and weak lower frequency speaker.

 

It's a basic desktop speaker system in that it'll be okay for watching Youtube and gaming.  Don't expect good musicality or detailed sounds in games.

 

When the best review only talks about how the speakers are less likely to be knocked over... your call:

I purchased this Logitech system to replace a similar Cyber Acoustics system that finally became too problematic.

Both systems have control pods which is what drew me to them. I really like the convenience of having the volume switch close at hand. The reason that I prefer this system to the Cyber Acoustics is that the speakers are compact and well balanced with the weight at the bottom. The Cyber Acoustic speakers were top heavy and easily got knocked over. I think the wiring was eventually knocked loose and the speakers malfunctioned as did the power control which continually turned itself on even when the pc was hibernating.

The sound is good in both systems but I prefer this Logitech system simply because of the design of the speakers. Hopefully, the fact that they do not get tipped over as easily will mean that this system lasts longer than the Cyber Acoustics system.

Very true. Though I have only ever known poor to mediocre audio quality. It sounds alright to me. That's why I was asking you guys since you obviously know more than I about audio systems and quality, I was hoping for some higher price range computer speaker or just speaker system recommendations that I can hook up to my computer.

Honestly, go listen to some speakers at Best Buy/Magnolia, Guitar Center has a lot of studio monitors, etc.

 

There are Mackie's in the price range for you, from $100 to $220 and many others that are SELF POWERED, meaning you just plug in a 3.5" jack and their power cord....

@dizmo might can help with some speaker recommendations too, he helped when I was looking at my Mackie's.

 

Edit:  If you have the money, I definitely suggest a good set of speakers.  They will last decades, it's an investment that is incredibly worth it.

Klipsch is awesome. I don’t have this set myself but I have a few friends who do. For the price range I’m quite jealous. Wish I had bought this instead of my Logitech 5.1.

I don't know if I have the time available to go to Best Buy. Do you think it would be helpful to go visit a Best Buy? I'm looking into the Mackie's right now, and thanks for the device. I think I've switched from a quick replacement mindset to a serious investment.

for around 200 i would try and stretch a tiny bit to speakers such as the Klipsch rp14pm's, or the edifier r1700bt's

Micca make decent stuff but they arent like "outstanding" for the price, but its a fine choice.

It seems it has come down to the - Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System - and the - Logitech Z623 400 Watt Home Speaker System, 2.1 Speaker System - Both of which seem to be good reliable speakers. Both have (according to reviews) good sound quality and bass.

 

Though the Klipsch seems to more praise for its sound quality and the fact that it has tweeters on its speakers certainly helps in its fight against the Z623's. The Z623's have no such tweeters on its speakers. So the audiophiles in the Amazon reviews for the Klipsch say that it is far superior to the Z623's. Also, although the subwoofer for the Z623's is half an inch larger than the Klipsch speaker system, the Klipsch warriors claim that its subwoofer is tuned and provides a better cleaner sound than the Z623's. 

 

With all this in mind, there were a few reviews in there by less experienced audio listeners stating that they couldn't tell a significant difference between the two. All of this was fought in the questions and reviews for the Klipsch speakers. The reviews and questions for the Z623 speakers had very little mention of the Kilpsch competition, but all spoke highly of the quality of the Z623's. Which makes me think that I'm worried about this far too much. The Klipsch speakers are good, but so are the Z623's, supposedly. But the Klipsch speakers are better, but the difference isn't that terribly drastic? But the Z623's also sound great. Both sets of speakers are THX-certified, so they are both good enough for movie watching, which isn't really something I'm interested in, but in terms of music, they're both good, but the Klipsch speakers are better depending on what kind of music I'm listening too. 

 

A major of interest. The Klipsch speakers are available from a third party seller only for $300. On the official Klipsch website, they are available for $150. The Logitech speakers, on the other hand, are currently on sale for $91 (from $150). Considering the small (or apparently pretty significant depending on who your asking) difference in quality between the two speaker systems I would immediately think to purchase the Z623's with its more affordable price tag. But I'm thinking more long term. What speaker is going to serve me better for the long run? I'd say the Klipsch speakers. Except, the warranty for these speakers only lasts for 1 year. In contrast, the Logitech Z623's warranty lasts for 2 years. Which means for a far longer time, if the Z623's break, then I can get them repaired or replaced.

 

I think, personally, I should just go for the Logitech speakers before the sale is over. But this is the information that I've collected on both, what do you all think?

I had the Logitech speakers before the creative ones and returned them as they used tto either pop or cut off sound if the sound was above 25%

The klipsch speakers will sound so much better due to the 2 way satellites. Also thx means fuck all until you get to the much higher grade's of thx. I would just buy the klipsch as the logitechs apparently have a pretty boomy sub which you do not want. Quality over quantity is important.
