Are there different pin layouts for ecc and non ecc ddr2 memory cause I was trying to upgrade one of my old vm servers and it seemed the memory I had bought didn't fit even though it's an lga 771 system which does fit ddr2 memory

Not necessarily ECC, but fully buffered yes. Are the sticks you are trying to use fully buffered? If they are then they will not fit in a standard ddr2 socket that was not made for it, as they have a different physical notch.

 

For example: Top DIMM is fully buffered and the bottom DIMM is not.
