Not necessarily ECC, but fully buffered yes. Are the sticks you are trying to use fully buffered? If they are then they will not fit in a standard ddr2 socket that was not made for it, as they have a different physical notch.

 

For example: Top DIMM is fully buffered and the bottom DIMM is not.
