Ok, so I find this a mildly interesting topic, there appears to be wildly differing standards depending on where you live.

In the US, for the most part, there is a MASSIVE personal space bubble that extends out at least a yard from all citizens.  Anyone going inside that protective sphere better be starting a fight, or a loved one, or there will be problems... actually the first is kind of a problem, but just go with it.

The interesting thing is that I've found that people from many places in latin america are completely different, it's almost as if there is no personal space bubble at all.  They seem to be MUCH more touchy feely, expressions of friendship are often shown with arms around necks and the like.  In the US I think many of us would react to that kind of interaction as if we were being come onto, it's just very different.

Is it different depending on where you live in the US?  Other western nations?  I kind of think Australians always sound hyper friendly because of the use of the word "mate"

It just sounds so... intimate.  If someone called me mate, I'd think they were saying we had some DEEP friendship, but it seems like its thrown around like popcorn over there.

nb4 american barbarian has gone insane again

I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar...

My bubble depends a lot.

Some persons can come to 0.001cm away but some need to stay at 1Km away. :)
