PfSense Box Consideration

I currently have my C2D 2140 (i think thats what it is) 775, with SuperMicro server board. Running PfSense. What I am worried, does that suck up power?

 

I have a 200/10 connection right now.

 

A friend did recommend the NetGate SG-1100. But that's $150.

 

I thought, can I go with this? As base.

Id guess around 50-60 watts on a core 2 system at idle, it really isn't that bad.

 

You can measure this with a multimeter or a kill a watt meter if you want

 

That board should be fine, but you want a pcie nic.

I do have a Kill-A-Watt. I can test that.

 

Now I think of it... I think a server like a Dell PowerEdge would draw more power.

 

Does any LGA 775 CPU (C2D, C2Q, Xeon) support AES-NI? I think only the 3rd gen i5's have it. (not the i3)

OK, I just did a test with the KaW.

 

I get 63W from that 775 board. That sound about right?

Yes that sounds right. If you are going with a SOC board make sure your PCIe NIC is compatible.

 

The board you linked only has 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 Slot so 4, 8, and 16 slot NICs won't fit.

You can also look at the edgerouter, they're usually under $100. I'm not sure how well they'd work for gigabit connections, but would do the job for most homes.
