M.2 PCIe x2 SSD in SATA-only slot?

I'm thinking about replacing the boot drive in my laptop, which is a Toshiba OEM PCIe x2 128GB SSD, with a PCIe x4 one at first, though the price for 1TB (SX8200 at CAD240) is just too high comparing to SATA (SU800 CAD160). I know there's the 660p for about the same cost, but seeing how fast I'm sucking the lifespan off the current SSD dry I'd stay safe on TLC. My laptop (HP Omen 17-an110ca) however doesn't make it clear whether the M.2 slot supports SATA drives, so I'll buy a M.2 SATA to USB-C adapter. I'll have a spare drive eventually and a port I dont have devices for anyway. I am really desperate on storage space.

 

At the end, does PCIe x2 SSD work in SATA mode? If it does then I can go cheap on the adapter, otherwise I'll have to pay a tad more for PCIe x4 adapters (though they could be slow, neither SSDs are that fast)

Not sure it would be overall worth it, plus the keying is different (unless said otherwise on the laptop) so it may not even work. Adapters are finicky in laptops due to size.

SU800 and current SSD are both B+M key so keying is the same
