OP could end up buying a good CPU for a great deal then pair it with a crap motherboard and everything goes to ****

Yeah what sort of motherboard is it, what chipset, brand, name.

 

Its like yeah of course a 9900K will work on a Z390 board, but you're not gonna throw a top-end chip like that into any sketchy bargain basement Z390 board and have it power throttled to hell or worse fry it entirely

yes but what board? x79 are littered with boards made of recycled parts and expect life is counted in weeks. Not saying socket 1150 doesnt have bad boards either
