Need some help with microphone setup

I bought a new pair of headphones and the headphones do not have a microphone. My old Logitech headset has a removable one. I thought just for now, I could plug it into my monitors headphone jack (asus 240hz) then get the usb cable from the monitor to my PC. should it work because its not working. How could I get it to work? it would be great you know :).
