It has been a few years since I have look at  processors for laptops. But my rule of thumb was get something in the i5 -7 range over 2Ghz and your usually pretty good.  However today I was just browsing a few laptop in the $500-$1,000 range for fun, and I notice that on almost all i5-i7 processors had a base clock speed of 1.6-1.8Ghz. But it looks like they boost up to 3.4ghz-4.0ghz.

 

Guessing these are still worthwhile processors with the turbo boost when you need it and lower power usage when you don't need it? I might just be having some PTSD from the netbook days where the processor would just be stuck at 100% all of the time. 

 

But how does turbo boost work? Does it just go to the max when you need it and stay there until you finished? Guessing thermals play a role in this as well?

If the frequency can change so much, what is the point of getting say the i7-8550U over the i5-8250U  for example?

Both the 8250u and the 8550u have 8 threads.

 

Ahh, so the turbo boost is for single threaded performance only, correct? Could multiple core turbo boost up a little bit at once? Or will it always be a single core gets turbo boosted?

oh lol, the i7 has more cache aswell

 

Turbo boost is for everything. 1 core will boost the most, 2 slightly less, 4 even less. Still above

stock.

i7-8550U 4 core is 3.7ghz, 1/2 is 4.

i5-8250U 1/2/4 core is 3.4ghz.

They will turbo up fairly high in multi-thread, but only in single-thread will they achieve the rated turbo speed (iirc).

base = guaranteed frequency

 

turbo = in the most ideal situation, will reach this frequency. Note that often single core turbo is displayed, not all core turbo which you need to look up elsewhere

 

This means the actual speed of the same model of CPU will vary (quite a lot in some cases) on the system you're using, especially on prebuilts including laptops. I remember Lenovo having a laptop with 8250U configured to 25w and has enough cooling to sustain that 25w. As a result it beats almost everything using the same chip and even many using the supposedly faster 8550U

Hmm so when I am looking at benchmarks for a CPU I really need to search for bentchmarks done by the specific laptop to get a real world result. That is good to know.
