My son just bought a 1080 144hz monitor to go with his computer but he is having trouble getting any game to consistently run at 144fps

His system is as follows

Asus b350 mobo

Ryzen 5 1600x

16gb ddr4 2400

EVGA RTX 2080

250gb Evo 860 (os drive)

500gb Evo 860 (game drive)

when we have Hwinfo and RTSS running, we can see that his CPU and GPU never come close to being maxed and changing graphics settings to lower doesn't impact the fps, only lowers the already low loads on CPU and GPU.

Minecraft - CPU 30% GPU 25% (max load) frames fluctuate between 114-130

Destiny 2 - CPU 35% GPU 65% frames 99-125

He read somewhere that getting 3000/3200mhz RAM would allow him to get 144fps.  Can anyone confirm or deny this claim?

I know that faster RAM can help fps,  but I would it help that drastically that he could get a steady 144?

Intel is the way for steady 144. Higher memory bandwidth and lower latency helps Ryzen do much better (and also Intel to a lesser degree) in high frame rate gaming but it won't compensate for everything. It's bound by the CPU's architecture.

Overclock the snot out of the RAM. It'll give you the biggest boost, then start playing with core clocks. That'll help you get closer, but I don't think you'll get 144Hz in every game. First gen Ryzen is not great for over 120Hz.

Hey guise - I own 2 Ryzen systems now 1 with 2133mhz and 1 with 3200mhz - the only game so far that cares for higher Frequency Ram is GTA5 out of the pool of a games Ive sampled

Everything else doesn't give a damn about the frequency of ram sans Firestrike and Timespy.  Heaven no change, Cinebench no change etc.

Its all about Single Core for high FPS in gaming.  AMD just doesn't have what intel does in that sector.

@Wadzinsky heres the basic quick and dirty of it:

Ryzen can build a 3 lb bag of Frames you can shove frames into.

Your GPU can build 5 lbs of Frames in 1 second

Your GPU is only allowed to shove 3 lbs of Frames in that 1 second due to the small bag allowed by Ryzen.

Intel creates bigger 1 second windows for the GPU to dump its frames into.

Ryzen just isn't for LOW LATENCY (High FPS) gaming.  It does AWESOME, but its not going to bring to the table what Intel does in that single core sector.

Cinebench typically sees the same change as a hefty core overclock as it does with RAM running at Ryzen's 2933Mhz.

His monitor also has freesync (which I just saw for the first time) and it is amazing.  But I'm old and my eyes think 60 is just fine.    I agree, anything over 100 is going to help immensely and with freesync, he won't be getting any screen tearing.

I think his system is pretty damn good the way it is

I love AMD, hate intel.  Nothing wrong with it, I paid $136 for a Ryzen 7 1700 - Intel cant touch that price to performance.

Cinebench, proven, I can do it on 2 different chipsets and already have - is within margin of error no matter what you do with RAM at any frequency between 2133 and 3200.  Buy a set of each and then you will know.

The difference between 2133mhz and 3200 MHz is SCORE 1606 with 2133mhz, and 1603 with 3200mhz.

I will be doing my own manual overclocking, timing tightening, and voltage increases to see if ACTUAL results can be found.  But as far as it goes - the faster RAM isn't really doing anything from all the tests Ive run - SANS synthetic benchmarks.

Im a Adult Legos guy (slots) so the technical know-hows Im pretty much regurgitating what I am told so I would have to say yes its the Instructions Per Clock advantage most games rely first on single core, then on multi.

Intel just builds a bigger bag of Frames Per Second that can be handled by the GPU, then AMD, due to this IPC.

more like single core and latency advantage. If FX can clock 50GHz then it's the better chip, so it's not IPC.

Yes, easily.  I can play with settings to achieve whatever I need to, to do a comparison.  I have 3 monitors I can do it on.  I have already done all of these things.  There isn't some godly gain here.

Part of my motivation of getting my FX 8350 replaced was this tired old argument I had proven out in 2017.

So I built another Rig to prove it again in 2019.

There is no godly gains.  Except in GTA5 so far.  It saw a 9% increase in frames.  But that's it, sans Synthetics.

Im talking about RAM not overclocking the CPU.  Im talking about plug and play gains.  This weekend or next weekend I am going to start my results on Overclocking the CPU and messing with timings, voltages and whatnot on the RAM - because there is more room to be had here for gains.

However, for the regular person (yes building a PC with 3200 MHz ram up front is what you need to do etc) getting into computers, who wont overclock etc - there isn't gains to be had.  Would you like me to tag you on my wall post where theres 7 of us talking about this, Im getting bench requests and just posting when I can?

Real world results, not a guy making money on youtube, is what really matters to me.

And I can tell you the difference between dropping 2133mhz RAM and 3200mhz RAM into a R7 1700 system is nil.  If you already have 2133 no need to replace.  I wont be.  I will just have 1 system with 3200 and 1 with 2133..doing the same things.

Chief, he overclocks the CPU to 4.3GHz.

Then, the RAM to 3400MHz.

Then, he takes the both as high as he comfortably can.

The RAM itself gave him something like 200 points.

Then it doesn't matter what RAM you use as it all defaults to 2133. That's the stock clock of DDR4.

Sigh.

1.) It drops in at 2666mhz.

2.) I am not going to argue this with someone who can only link videos because I can just open a case and drop in different RAM to bench it and show you.

3.) If a User has to modify the entire system to get it to breathe better - than its not magical gains, its silicone dependent amirite?

4.) Not going to argue something I can prove, see also number 2.

5.) Infinity Fabric likes synthetic benchmarks.  Not real world performance gains.

*speaking about gaming only here*

Example:

In my B350 system

Firestrike

https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/34804609?v 2133mhz score of 13,133

https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/34930307? 3200mhz score of 13,297

I have tons of others I can post.  I can also do them from my B450 system.  I just cant justify spending all this time to my wife so this is the quick and dirty results before I head out for a few hours.
