Upgrading 6700k

Hey everyone, I'm planning on upgrading my CPU, I'm running a 6700k with a GTX 1080. I game on a 1440p 144hz monitor. I was planning on getting the 9700k, but with the whole Asus revealing Intel release date to Q2, I'm debating if I should wait or not. What do y'all think?

I think you should wait. A 6700K (especially if you do OC it) should not be a bottleneck for that GPU in basically any game, especially at 1440p.

So unless you really need to get better CPU performance for some non-gaming task, and need it NOW, then I'd wait.

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Thank you for your input, I only game on that computer, but I want to upgrade because I want to use the 6700k for a FreeNAS/Emby server.

I'd wait for zen 2. especially at 1440p, your bottle neck is the gpu.

I don't know if I want to go with Ryzen, I don't really need the extra cores since I only game and I would have to invest in faster RAM.

if you don't need the extra cores, then you can stick with the 6700k. The new Zen 2 are rumored to be approximately the perf of the 9900k (for the single die part).

For a FreeNAS, any modern CPU made in the last 3 years would work. I would recommend either a 8c Atom ULP proc, (60-90$ on Newegg, comes with mobo), or a AMD Athlon 200GE/2200GE or a Intel i3-8100T (for power efficiency)

When's Zen 3 supposed to come out?

And I am worried about the Emby side on the server, I don't know if a small processor like that would be enough.

You can also just change your CPU to 8700k with some bios mods, looks like your bios chip is not soldered one and it easy enough to flash it using flashing tool (costs around $3-5 on ebay or aliexprss)

Encoding and streaming video/audio is not super intensive. A chromebook can do it. Unless you plan to have many simultaneous clients (usually I find people just have like, one), you don't need to upgrade.

I have a discord bot that decodes/re-encodes, and transmits audio for my server. On top of all the other bot tasks. And that's my terribly written code from a boring plane ride. But it still is barely noticable usage on my server, which has been both a 6600K and 1700X. You have nothing to worry about.

Oh yeah I've also used it (with both CPUs) for VLC video streams on local and WAN, and again, not very noticeable CPU usage.

zen 2 (7nm ryzen) is scheduled to come out Q3, or early-late summer.

6700K if you are just gaming is a very good CPU and a 9700K is simply not worth it to me.  If anything either go with a 8700K or just payup and get a 9900K.  But to be frank unless you are 100% tied to Intel, I would say just go AMD since current gen X470 boards will be compatible with Ryzen 3000 but next gen Intel almost certainly will not work with Z390 boards.

Any coffee lake CPU will work on your motherboard, (however it an OC'd 9900k will go very hard on your VRM) this way you can save some money on motherboard upgrade

here is a link 8700k on Z170 board
