OEM boards may or may not recognize the Xeons, and those that recognize them may or may not be compatible. Check the manufacturer's site for compatibility before buying a Xeon.

Just go with non-ecc ram. What mobo are you using? I have an x5675 and it's great.

Asus Crosshair VII Hero X470

Ryzen 1800X - 4.2ghz @ 1.435v

Deepcool Gamerstorm Castle 360 RGB AIO

Corsair HX1000w

Thermaltake View 71 case

Corsair M65 Elite mouse

Redragon K551-RGB keyboard

RGB out the wazoo = good for at least 420fps in Crysis

Even though it is not officially supported, I have personally tested the HP Z400 to work just fine with both the X56xx and X55xx series of CPUs.

As far as ECC Ram goes, note that the HP Z400 will NOT work with REGISTERED memory (which is different from ECC memory). This system will function fine with both ECC and non ECC memory, just not RDIMMs or LRDIMMs.

Slightly misleading information, CPU compatibility on Z400 depends on BIOS boot block date, there are two versions IIRC and only the latter supports X5600-series. ECC RAM does work and you should use it, since its price is generally a lot lower and you won't be overclocking it anyway.

If you don't have the Motherboard, don't get the Xeon.

That's a nice upgrade for people who already own an LGA1366 Board.

But getting one now makes little sense because the Boards are rediculously overpriced, the Plattform is 10 years old and the CPUs not that great either.

A good Board for LGA1366 is 150€ or more. That's not worth it...

A decent Ryzen Board is 75€ or so, a 6 Core, if you're patient, can be seen for 100€ here and there, usually under 150€...
