So a friend of mine asked if I can build him a PC with a 500 dollar graphics card for 700 dollars.  I responded no but I realized that for 900 dollars I can pair a 760K, FM2+ board, decent quality parts and a GTX 780.  How bad of an idea is this?  For the 800 dollar PC I am debating on getting a GTX 760 and tossing in an SSD.  Thoughts?

Can for go something like a FX 6300 and this motherboard, http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-970ag43 . You may want to push the budget a bit.

I'd really not want to mess with a dead socket tbh.  This way if he upgrades there is no replacing the board plus AM3+ lacks PCI-E Gen 3 and SATA 3 on many lower end boards.

You're acting as if those Kaveri benchmarks are promising, and you're also pairing FM2+ with NVidia, so the benefit that future Kaveri chips (if they're not junk) will have is lost.

That.. Yeah. I'm lost. Why did you want FM2+ again?

Lacks features, PCI-E Gen 3, most lower end boards lack SATA 3, USB headers etc.

So you're looking to build a very future compatible pc for him at a lower cost. I see. Was trying to edit this into my prev. post but it broke + you replied, so here:

The Kaveri benefit is HSA technology and dual graphics. As far as I know, the 7850k will not allow for anything above R7, or more specifically (as I was told) the 240 + 250, GPUs to run in dual graphics mode with the APU. Future chips are expected to be compatible with R9 cards in dual graphics, or possibly just the Hawaii chipsets (290/290X and beyond). Maybe someone else can clear things up but I was under the assumption that hybrid crossfire/dual graphics mode will only work with AMD. Assuming this is the selling point of a high end APU, the price tag on them will be significantly close to Intel processors. So much that it makes no sense to buy a CPU that probably doesn't perform as well as an FX or i5 on it's own with a high end NVidia card over an AMD one. The difference between Intel and any AMD is the board price, though. That's pretty much always the case with budgeting.

My point is, you're putting all your eggs in one basket and that basket is the FM2+ socket and it's sketchy future right now as far as I'm conerned. My opinion, though. Edit: The reason why I didn't say "get X AMD video card instead of NVidia's X" is that that's one of the bigger reasons why I think FM2+ is so sketchy. There's no info stating that we are guaranteed an APU with dual graphics for the newer/higher end AMD GPUs any time soon.

That being said, maybe you can post a pcpartpicker list and people can try to modify it more towards what you want?

Ya I might drop the SSD and get an FX-8320 and a GTX 770.  Otherwise I'll have to get a 6300+GTX 760.

I dont really understand, why can you get an ssd, 8320 and gtx 770 OR a 6300 and a gtx 760? why not ignore the ssd, get an 8320, oc it to 4GHz&get a gtx 780

My Rig: AMD Ryzen 5800x3D | Scythe Fuma 2 | RX6600XT Red Devil | B550M Steel Legend | Fury Renegade 32GB 3600MTs | 980 Pro Gen4 - RAID0 - Kingston A400 480GB x2 RAID1 - Seagate Barracuda 1TB x2 | Fractal Design Integra M 650W | InWin 103 | Mic. - SM57 | Headphones - Sony MDR-1A | Keyboard - Roccat Vulcan 100 AIMO | Mouse - Steelseries Rival 310 | Monitor - Dell S3422DWG

It already boosts to 4GHz, and I can get a 770 without the SSD.  It's either:

FX-6300+GTX 760+SSD

FX-8320+GTX 770 No SSD

It's hard to OC AMD because their temperature sensors don't work.  I've bad every single APU read 200*C+ during tests...

I would go without the SSD and pick an 8320 and GTX 770. I'm using an 8350, but also a 770! Everything works perfectly fine, and unless you're choosing an i5, there's nothing better to go with than an 8320.

Also overclocking is mostly alright. Just choose a 990 chipset, and then the rest comes easy. Temperatures suck, though, sometimes the CPU still idles at '15C' (in dun broke).

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I'd go for the 760 + ssd for a better overall experience.

AMD sensors are about 9° of, calculate that in and your fine. I personally would not reccomend a ssd with windows 8, since your not getting a huge benefit off it, my friend has a 840 pro ssd and his windows boots in 2.5 secs, my barracuda in about 6-7seconds.

Ssd's are more for a smoother and snappier overall experience more than just fast boots. I had my system running for several months before I last turned it off and I still would hate to have to use the system without a ssd.
