Anime is just a medium, what kind of show do you like. (Not saying Anime isn't different, but it's like saying all TV show are like each others)

Clannad or Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo both have comedy and romance. Although both can be sad, Clannad will make you cry like a little bitch whether you want to or not. Also it's longer if you count After Story. I would probably recommend Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo for those reasons. If you like it try Clannad afterwards.

If you want action, try Fate/Zero. It's probably one of the best anime I've ever seen. Just try not to get put off by the first episode. It's twice as long and has no action but it is necessary for setting up the story. Highschool of the Dead is also really good if you don't take it too seriously.

Another anime which I really liked was Highschool DXD. Definitely not serious but some of the fights can be pretty cool. It's also very NSFW  ;)

My last suggestion is Steins;Gate. One of my favourites and quite popular although it doesn't really sound like what you're looking for.

I agree it does have comedy and romance but to me the romance seems to be something that only rarely pops up until the very end. Also there's not as much comedy as some of my other suggestions.

Have fun with the movie :)

EDIT: I should also probably mention that Steins;Gate has a very slow start which can be off-putting, especially for a first anime.

Sword Art Online

39717l.jpg

Personally I think this show was kind of meh. This is actually the show Slick watched and he seemed to like it.

The show is about a teenage boy who gets stuck inside a very advanced Virtual Reality MMORPG. You can't logout of the game, and if you die in game you die in real life as well. He and 10,000 other people are stuck in the game until the last boss gets defeated. It's 25 episodes long but is made up of two parts so you could just watch the first half if you wanted (spoiler: they complete the game about halfway through and then starts playing a new game, one where you can die without any issue). It mostly action/adventure but also contains some romance and comedy. The setting is amazing. I love the game world they are in, but the characters are pretty meh and it contains lots of bullshit that's just there to tie the story together (the main character gets super special awesome skills nobody else has making him OP, and stuff like that).

If you like role playing games then you will probably find this at least somewhat enjoyable. If you think shows like Naruto with cool battle scenes looks interesting then you will probably like this (I recommend this show over Naruto or One Piece any day of the week).

The World God Only Knows

43361l.jpg

Keima loves playing dating sims. That is all he does. He is not interested in "real girls" because he think they are inferior to the perfect girls in his games. He has no friends by choice and he loathe doing anything that's not playing games.

However, through a misunderstanding he has to team up with a cute devil called Elsie. Their mission is to capture loose souls that has escaped from hell. These loose souls hide inside girls' hearts and the only way to capture them is to make them fall in love. Keima has no choice but to use his knowledge from dating sims to make girls fall in love with him.

Comedy that contains lots of romance. The plot seems silly I know, but this show really shines because of the characters. If you want a solid comedy about romance then I highly recommend it.

Hyouka

50521l.jpg

This show is about a group of friends that solves mysteries. Things happen (not super natural, just normal stuff) and they solve the mystery. It's heavily inspired by stories like Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie.

It's has a decently serious tone and makes you think. Not a comedy but has a few jokes here and there.

Magical Girl Madoka Magica

55225l.jpg

I know you are already judging the hell out of this show. "That looks like a show for little girls". I know it does, but don't judge a book by its cover. There is a reason why it's classified as Thriller and has a 17+ rating.

I can't really tell you much about this show without spoiling anything sadly. You know how shows like Sailor Moon has teenage girls fighting against monsters and stuff? This show is a more serious take on that and shows that if a little girl tried to fight a huge monster, it wouldn't be all that cheerful and fun.

This show is action, thriller and drama. It's only 12 episodes long so it's a good show to start out with. Doesn't require that much investment. The art style is really weird though so that might be a bit off putting for some. If you want a dark and serious show then I highly recommend it. I was crying like a little girl at the end of it. It's so damn good.

Steins;Gate

41011l.jpg

I think this show has already been recommend in this thread, and there is a reason for that.

This show is about a group of people that invents a machine that can send text messages back in time. I can't really tell you more than that shit goes down hard after a while. I am a sucker for time travel and this is one of the best time travel stories I've come across so far. Everything gets wrapped up so nicely at the end.

It is 24 episodes and it is pretty slow at first, but then ~10 episodes in it switches to high gear and stays there all the way to the end. It requires a bit of investment but it really pays off. It's also rated 17+ because it contains lots of violence but if you are OK with that then it's worth watching. The first half or so of the show is kind of like a comedy staring a gang of silly characters, and the other half is action/adventure style with a really complex story. Once it starts getting serious it becomes one of those shows you just can't stop watching because you keep wanting to know what happens.

Toaru Majutsu no Index

10815l.jpg

The story is set in Academy City. A whole city dedicated to training and experimenting on "espers", people with supernatural powers. Each person has a certain esper level ranging from 0 to 5 where 0 is no power at all (a normal human) and 5 is very, very powerful. The main character is Touma, a level 0. However, even though he is a level 0 he still has a power. His right hand can negate anything super natural including other peoples' esper powers. The show is about Touma helping people in trouble out. It's a pretty good show if you don't take it seriously. The characters are over the top to the point where they are hilarious. The action is good and well made. The story is pretty interesting.

It's mostly an action show and it has two seasons and both are 24 episodes long. It also has a spinoff centering around a girl called Misaka, which is a level 5 esper that can control electricity. There is also a movie, special episodes, OVAs etc... So if you end up liking it then there is far more where that come from.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

13491l.jpg

This is the show that really got me interested in anime. One benefit of this show is that the dub is pretty good, so if you aren't used to Japanese voices then it's good to start out with. I love this show mostly because of the movie, which I think is one of the best movies of all time (not just anime movies, all movies). If you want to know what the show is about then just check out the first 2 and a half minutes of episode 1:

Toradora

22125l.jpg

If you want a pure comedy/drama/romance show then this is pretty good. It's about a boy named Ryuuji and a girl named Taiga. They dislike each other but through a sequence of events they find out that Ryuuji is in love with Taiga's best friend, and Taiga is in love with Ryuuji's best friend. Even though they don't like each other, they decide the best thing to do would be to help each other out.

Other shows that are good but I don't feel like writing about:

Zero no Tsukaima (fantasy/adventure/romance/comedy)

Daily Lives of High School Boys (comedy)

Fate/Zero (Action/fantasy/very serious)

Yu yu hakusho is definitely worth watching.

If I may annotate with commentary

Fate/Zero. It's probably one of the best anime I've ever seen. Would definitely recommend. Like it was said, the first and maybe second episode is a lot of necessary information thrown at you very fast, so you're really going to need to pay attention to that and not get worn out by it.

Steer far away from Fate/stay night, different animators, different writers, horrid anime.

Highschool of the Dead: starts off really promising, unfortunately devolves into a pile of filler nothingness with "oh by the way there's zombies somewhere in this" Starts off about zombies and progressively becomes nothing having to do with zombies.

Sword art: Falls off a cliff in 2nd arc and towards the end of first

Magical girl Madoka magicka:

"That looks like a show for little girls"

QFT
Probably one of the best series I've ever seen, the animation style, title, and opening episodes are deceptive to anyone who hasn't read the description or seen a few episodes in. Still waiting for the movies to finish up, shits deep :P

Steins;gate: Modern classic

Index: dropped it, IMO Railgun parallel (2nd season esp) is much better, has more likable main characters as opposed to the Index pairing since Railgun mains seems much more dynamic and closer to an actual story instead of "hurrdurr i take a few punches then just say fk u I win because I'm a young high school boy hero who stands up for everything right cus all I do is win"

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: All good except for that dreaded 7-8 episode arc in S2 of repeating the same day over and over again

Well that's what I meant with that you shouldn't take it too seriously. The characters are so over the top I think it becomes enjoyable. Accelerator is suppose to be this evil guy but he is so goofy and batshit insane. Touma running around punching girls in their faces and telling everyone how they should follow his ideals. I agree with you that Railgun is more entertaining (doesn't take itself so seriously, Misaka is love and Uiharu is awesome), but you should start out with Index if you want to watch it properly. Otherwise you will go "who the hell is that" or "what is going on" in Railgun a few times. Also, Railgun season 2 will spoil certain things in Index season 1.

All good except for that dreaded 7-8 episode arc in S2 of repeating the same day over and over again

Yeah it's best to just watch the first, second and last episode in that arc. What the hell were they thinking?

But the movie. The movie is so damn good. Love the time travel stuff. It's too bad we will probably never get a third season... Kind of sucks how the anime just ends all of a sudden.
