dpi is the refresh rate of the sensor. like a image sensor on digital camera, but operates at very high speed and reads infred (mostly) images.

windows mouse speed is like a digital zoom of sensor, default is 6 which is roughly 1:1, move 1 inch is about 400 pixels. for gaming you have to turn acceleration off as it's only useful for trackpad.

a mouse with 6400 dpi can read 6400 individual images when moved by 1 inch, whereas a mouse with 400 dpi can only reads 400 images.

in default setting, move one inch in one direction roughly equals 400 pixel when you're using io1.1, which means with higher dpi, your mouse moves faster, or can cover much more screen spaces with same amount of movement.

high dpi means little to non-gaming enviornment, as screen spaces are limited, crazy high dpi will make your mouse so twitchy to the point its not usable. while you can set windows mouse speed to low, its a digital zoom, it will make it less accurate. you should lower dpi setting in the driver instead.

in gaming on the other hand, it's totally different story. you can set camera speed in most shooter games, where higher dpi translates into smoother movement and quicker response. some folk still prefer very slo camera speed, me included, almost fling your arm to do a 180 degree turn. high dpi with slow movement means more precise aiming and better control of the weapon.

note that refresh rate is not sampling rate. usb mouse supports up to 1000hz sample rate, ps/2 or non gaming mice is 125hz. high sampling rate is essential for gaming or precision drawing, if you drawing circles, 1000hz is a lot smoother than 125hz. same for gaming, especially fps games.

all in all, you probably dont need to take dpi numbers too seriously, 2000 dpi or so is enough for most people. when buying a mouse, the first thing you should consider is the shape. to me, sensor is probably the last thing i would consider.

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

In theory, higher DPI+lower in game sens is better, but it really makes no difference. Just use whatever you find comfortable, pretty much all CS pros use 400dpi.

 Yeah shroud uses a 400dpi too but why would they? must be some kind of advantage right?

just simply what they are use to. Most people start out with cheap mice so they get use to that. It would take them time to get use to new settings. The benefits of higher dpi are very small and not worth re-adjusting their feel for the mouse to most of them.

If you've ever heard of Alfredoplays he actually learned from the good e-sports players that lower dpi, larger space to move your mouse, and using your whole arm rather than your wrist for movement are all key in being fast and accurate in shooters. He's gained the Diamond rank (status?) in Rainbow Six Siege using that exact method, so it clearly works. The way to ween yourself down is to lower your DPI by about 200 every week (or couple days) or so until you're at around 400 to 600 DPI where he himself keeps it at. Given who he is and what he's accomplished, I'd follow what he has to say.

Not really, iirc shroud said that he uses 400 dpi because he knows how to perfectly tune his sens @ 400dpi in every game he plays. In general though, DPI isn't that important. Your eDPI (DPI*in game sense) is much more important. For example, in CS 400DPI and 3 sens is the same as 800DPI and 1.5 sens, which is the same as 1200DPI and 1 sens (all are 1200 eDPI).

  • 2 weeks later...

Honestly feel like there's a lot of "I think" or "it should work like this" here. The reasons why most esport pros have low DPI isn't because it's what they are used to from an old cheap mice. Obviously that argument wouldn't hold up so well now that they have spent years++ playing on "expensive gaming mice" from sponsorships.

Basically the only reason why they use low DPI is the competetive advantage you get. By having a low DPI of lets say 400, yes you have to move your mouse much more for the same movement at 1600 DPI, but again you gain much more precision. People who play shooters like CSGO and PUBG value precision and accuracy, moreso than the ability to turn 180 degrees faster.(also the reason why you see some players flick their arm so strongly to turn, because they have low DPI and need to move a lot for a 180)

So by having a lower DPI you can have better control. That said having lower DPI doesnt make you magically a better player, it just has more potential.

It depends on what kind of player you are..low or high sensitivity player.

low=require more space

high=require less space

DPi is just the sensitivity of the sensor, the higher the further your cursor will travel and vice versa.

as for which is best low or high is depends on you and the performance of the sensor.

as for in game sensitivity, it will just alter the value of the DPi. a rough example is when you move your mouse for an inch at 1000 dpi..natively it will travel at 1000pixel/inch but if u say set your ingame sensitivity at +5 then it will be registered as 5000dpi so the cursor will travel at 5000pixel/inch.

They make up for reaction time with accuracy, the slower the mouse the more time it feels like you have to be able to click in the right spot.

I personally have this issue, I tend to bounce my mouse when playing so I lower my DPI so I am more accurate when playing FPS competitive.

But having one that is higher makes you have the ability to choose.

(depending on the mouse)

This.

I used a Logitech G300S is because the additional buttons layout is its main selling point for me, even more because it's really cheap as a gaming mouse. It has 1ms respons and 1000hz, and only 2500 DPI with decent optical sensor. I moved from it to the similar buttons layout and the more comfortable bigger size mouse the Roccat Tyon which has only around 8000 DPI for a low rated laser sensor which I dont have any problem with it..

I agree that the sensor is the last resort for me personally. I prefer one which match to my needs like additional buttons layout, size and shape. Wheight and wired/wireless are same as the sensor or number of DPI it has.
