Need help upgrading 4690s

Go to solution Solved by Bananasplit_00,

drop in an I7 4790K and you are done.

Both of them you'd need a new motherboard for, and at that point I would say to look at Ryzen. The chips are pretty cheap and the performance is good.

thank you , I was hoping to avoid getting a new cpu all togeather. getti g a motherboard that will over clock the 6400 isn't hard. I'm just curious if either chip would be better in performance way with my system rather than the low 4690s.

You wouldnt be able to overclock either of those chips as they're not unlocked anyway.

Where you are right now though, you can look into getting a used 4790 and upgrading your current system.

6400 can be overclocked to 4.75ghz actually

Depending what board and what bios version, yes- but the chances those line up are kind of slim.

Either way, neither of those are very strong chips and I'd definitely keep my eye on a 4790.

okay thank you. I had an offer for a i5 -8400 also for $140

All depends on what you want to spend, getting the 4790 might be the most economical. Though the 8400 is a good chip.

By the way, make sure to quote when you reply so we get notifications

well I mean I can get a regular 4790 for $150. I'm wondering if that upgrade would last me a few years. I only play at 1080p

It will hold fine for 1080p gaming

The 8400 you have to take account for the overpriced Intel motherboards and DDR4

drop in an I7 4790K and you are done.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

yeah if I can get this guy to reply I'll get the k version for $160 or so. if not I'll get the non k version for $140

Sounds good, thats a fair bit cheaper than what they go for around me, usually more like €200 here :) Im using an I7 4790K and a 1080 atm and its way overkill for playing card games and web browsing but its a great combo :D

well I mean I could a better motherboard but reality is maybe I should wait for a game thats needs more demand. I get 60fps and more on everything just the cpu I have and motherboard 4690s is pretty week. i just dont want to spend that much on a cpu, I would rather just spend maybe $100 on a cpu and over clock it

Its fun to own good hardware and if you buy something better now it will be longer before the next time you will feel performance limited is how i see it :) My system is unlikely to get any upgrades until something actually dies in it :P

Being that you have a low power CPU currently, will your power supply and heat sink be up to the task of running and cooling a CPU with a 30+W higher TDP that could output upto 150W of heat under severe loads and consume over 100W of power? Will the motherboard VRM's be able to handle it as well, the model of motherboard would be useful. If it's an OEM system it may not have the capacity to cool and power a higher wattage CPU or the BIOS in that board may not correctly identify/run a non validated CPU.

I just upgraded to a 850 watt power supply. I also have water cooling going at the moment. I think it would be able to handle it. the only thing is I might need to upgrade the motherboard but again I'm looking for the best value

I mean if I do upgrade the motherboard than why not just get a Ryzen. I just want the cheapest and best performance option.

Sure, you could do that too, not a bad choice but its going to be a lot more expensive for not a lot more performance most likely.

Just pointing out that if he's looking at dropping $180 on a CPU with DDR3 support, he can put himself on an upgrade path for not a whole lot more... Obviously this is a low tier Ryzen combo.

appreciate the help guys. yeah I mean I might be In luck for a 4790k with a motherboard combo but we will see. like i said my motherboard isnt the best and 1600hz isnt the fastest ddr3 vengeance ram. i might just look around at ebay combos or something.

Ryzen 3 will be dropping soon, and 2nd gen is already cheap, but going to get cheaper. I'd watch for the deals and look for a 2600 or 2700. DDR4 (at almost twice your current speed) is pretty well priced right now, though. Good time to make the jump.

If you sold your setup, you could probably get a good portion of it covered. If you're gonna upgrade, might as well actually upgrade.
