Hi,

So i live in NZ and i want to get a new video card for my gaming PC soon. You can get a EVGA gtx 780 from amazon for 510USD which is 617NZD. Its a $1000NZD here, i know that you can ship from the US if its under $400 NZD and not get charged TAX. But if i send it to a family member in the UK and then they ship it to me in NZ, will customs still open it and charge TAX?

Thanks for the help.

that is a 50/50 chance customs cant check everything coming in and out but if you do get checked and tax is charged i think you will be coming out ahead still.

It's generally not that easy, and will vary depending on the shipper that's used. The family member in the UK could be charged tax/duty/brokerage, as well as yourself when you get it although this is less likely if they send it as a gift.

Why can't you get it shipped directly to you?

It's just luck to be honest. Sometimes the customs check it and sometimes they don't. Trust me, I've had both experiences. I bought a Galaxy S4 from Amazon.com, shipped it to my friend in the US, then he shipped it to me and customs didn't check it. I tried the same thing with a phone for my mom and it got stuck in the customs and they made me pay tax.

you could get one off PC Case Gear, which is australian, and it should be alright. I think they ship world wide and that way you'll get it faster.  They start at around 600, then maybe 100 for shipping

Thanks for a quick answer, i used a duty estimator and it said it would be around $145NZD in TAX. So yes it would still be cheaper.

I have had a look at PC case gear and they only ship in Australia.

I could use something called youshop, because amazon won't ship graphic cards to NZ. What youshop does is sends it to a youshop place in the US then they send it to NZ, but when it gets to NZ they send it to customs for checking. If the order is under $400 NZD then customs will leave it alone, one of my friends brought a card from the US and used youshop and since the order was under $400. He did't get charged any TAX.

So you'd rather have your family in the UK get charged the fees?

Ok there's something I'm clearly not understanding here. How is it cheaper to get it shipped to the UK, and then shipped to you? You'll have to pay shipping twice.

Also, the card will get hit with a 70 pound tax when it arrives in the UK.

Getting it shipped directly to you is ~ $145 NZD

Getting it shipped abroad and then to you is ~ $220 NZD, and the money doesn't go to support your own government.

It would only be worth shipping it through the UK, if it was sent as a gift and if that meant customs did't look at it. But it looks like ether way they are still going to charge TAX, so yes now i have found out they will most likely charge TAX even if its sent as a gift, it is cheaper and better to send it straight to me.
