raspberry pi 3+ Help! [Should I Get One?]

Heya!

So, I was in the market for something.. Ill do some explaining.

 

So, My Desktop is on one side of my room, and my TV is mounted on the opposite wall from where my Desktop is.

I would be looking for something like a raspberry pi 3+ but was looking for someone with one that could help me better understand them, and if I should invest in one.

 

I have a couple of friends with them, but thought I should get a double check before buying.

 


The real only use I would use it for is watching "TV" I have Rogers, but I do not have a Rogers Box in my room so I can not watch TV - BUT you can use Rogers any place TV website to stream Video from a web browser. 

but I was wondering if the raspberry pi 3 could handle 720 / 1080p video with no lag?

I would avoid using a raspberry pi for that, have you looked into the firesticks?

Why would you not suggest it?? lmao.

The webrowers on that thing looks absolutely horrible.. let alone doesn't even come with a browser

You could buy a microSD card and put whatever distro you desire on it and see if you could borrow a friend's RPi. That way you can test everything and if it works you can keep your SD card that you've configured and go and buy your own.

The pi 3+ runs at 1.4Ghz and has 1GB of LPDDR2 SDRAM, price for just the SBC (single board computer) is 35.00usd. Could you stream with it, yeah, totally, but get a heat-sink or an aluminum case for it. Personally, I was running a model b with OSMC, and I was really disappointed. like @erroneous_twain said, try it out.

Yeah it could totally do that. I use my Rpi3+ as a steamlink and it handles 100Mb/s+ constant streaming with encode/decode at the same time too

One thing to note, is that the WLAN adapter on an RPi chews up CPU cycles like a madman. So if you're planning on streaming it's much better to connect it via a LAN cable. It can be the difference between lag and no lag.

The bundle you linked was going to be your cheapest option for the pi. 113.04 CDN is outrageously expensive for what your getting.

I would check ebay for a cheap (real) pc, like this one, even dated hardware would run faster than a pi (my two cents).

grab a cheap keyboard, and a video adapter from china, and you have yourself a media center pc.

 

That said, if you really want a pi for your tv, that bundle was a good buy, I would borrow your friends pi for a few days to see if you like it first, before you get anything.

 

Edit: heck, even a second hand laptop with hdmi would be better. Carefully weigh your options.
