If it conforms to USB3 specifications, yes it should be backwards compatible. It will run at USB2 speeds.

I Believe they are only BACKWARDS compatible. IE the device must be same / higher than the PC?

It goes both ways.

 

  • You can plug a USB 2.0 external HDD into a USB 3.0 port. It will run at 2.0 speeds.
  • You can plug a USB 3.0 external HDD into a USB 2.0 port. It will run at 2.0 speeds.

I've done both.
