PC keeps 'crashing' please help

Hi guys I need help with an issue I have been having with my PC. Often but randomly my PC will 'crash' where the screen either goes black or vertical lines of differing colors. And the sound either loops or continues playing, sometimes the sound will just stop, not as often though. It only really happens when I am playing games and a few times when I was watching YouTube. If anyone knows what's causing this I would appreciate it if you could help.

did u happen to test your memory, i have ran several mem tests and they have passed

Did you use Memtest 86? Because it's not alway correct in its diagnosis.

It can also be an unstable GPU. If you have any overclock on the GPU or the VRAM, then scale it back to the default settings. If you have the option, try running the onboard graphics only.

yes it was memtest86 and i have tried severely underclocking the gpu and that has not helped either. should i remove one stick of ram and run a game and if it fails swap sticks (i have 2x4gb sticks) and test again?

It sound like the GPU is not the problem.

But yes, try running one stick and test. If it fails put that stick in a different slot, and repeat with the other stick if necessary.

I have tried each stick separately in each slot and it is still failing, any more suggestions? thanks for your help!

If possible, try some different RAM sticks. If that fails you might have to try adifferent motherbaod.

Do you use a 78XX series gpu?

The black screen of death / black vertical lines on a white backdrop problems seem to be more common on the 78XX platform that other gpu's.

Yes i have a 7850, but it is not usually on a white backdrop (usually grey bars and black background). Oh god now it could be the ram, the mobo or the gpu. may aswell get a new pc, haha!

Troubleshoot one at a time.

Do you have onboard video on your cpu? You could use that in the meantime while you check your RAM.

I am 99% sure its the 7850, I've owned 4 of them. 3 of them have had your issue.

Don't go buying a new gpu just yet, but see if you can borrow a gpu or find an old one laying around (literally ANY, even a HD4770 or something equally as old and bad) and see if the problem persists. If it stops after the gpu replacement, try and RMA for another 7850 or try and get store credit with whatever vendor sold you the gpu.

Yeah too bad its out of warranty. Looks like i will be saving up for a new graphics card.

Thread Derail: What is a good gpu that doesn't have many issues?

770 2gb edition / 280x with aftermarket cooling

if you only play older games, 660ti's are very cheap atm.
