Hey guys, I haven't been here in forever, but I'm at kind of a loss. I've been running into an issue over the course of the past year or so (between multiple GPUs, specifically 750ti, 960, 970, 1080, and 2080) where I can't get anything over 100 fps for more "demanding" (loosely defined) titles like GTA V or Destiny 2. The 750ti, 960, and 970 were tried at low graphics levels with no luck either. I'm fairly certain that it is an issue with either my CPU or my RAM, but I'm not entirely sure which or if it is a separate issue entirely. I figured I'd finally go to outside sources for help here, especially since I can't seem to find any sort of answers to my issue online. Here's my build:

OS: Windows 10 Pro

CPU: Ryzen 7 1800X (Base clock speed)

RAM: 4x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 (cmr32gx4m4c3000c15, clocked at 2933mhz, 1.3V, 18-20-20-38)

GPU: MSI GTX 2080 Gaming X Trio

MOBO: MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC

PSU: EVGA Supernova 850 Gold

Any help is greatly appreciated, many thanks!

1800x at base speed with those ram timings might be the cause.

Did you try the GPU's in another system? might be something wrong with mobo or cpu

The mobo actually happens to be new and it was still an issue with my old mobo, so I'll look into it potentially being a CPU issue.

Luckily I have some extra headroom for overclocking, so I should be able to take care of the CPU no problem. I'll also try to get the timings fixed up and see if that helps out. Thanks to you both so far!

Yeah you're CPU bottlenecked. First gen Ryzen (even 1800x) don't play well with >100fps gameplay. I mean you could try to push to 4.1ghz and that'd help a bit but you're not going to be getting much over 100fps on that CPU in AAA games no matter what you do to it. That's just not what they were built for.  Your best bet is waiting until Zen 2 then upgrading to that. Should be a lot better for gaming.

Overclocking did nothing, ram timing didn't help, I guess I'll just wait for a new cpu

Wait literally nothing? Like a 0% increase in performance? What clockspeeds did you set it to?

I set it to 4.1 GHz, the max I can do on my motherboard without needing to do everything manually. The average framerates didn't change a bit, but my CPU got to about 70C+ when it's usually around 50C under load

You almost certainly won't hit 100+ fps in GTA V with that CPU.

Ok well it naturally turbos to I think 3.8ghz anyways so that's not really a thing you'd feel. Did you actually benchmark it? Because if it was literally a 0% change in performance when benchmarking then upgrading your CPU won't help.

I just benchmarked it in terms of going through the GTA V benchmark and running Destiny on various maps. In none of those cases was I able to get much better than my previous results, so that's why I said that the framerates didn't change a bit. I might look into just returning the 2080 for now until I can afford just upgrading my motherboard and CPU.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to solve this issue though? This thread has basically already established that the CPU is the bottleneck.

Wait and see how the next Ryzen chip performs in games.  It should work with your mobo.
