Need upgrading advice

Go to solution Solved by 3 Lions,

Try and find a used i7 4770K or i7 4790K on Ebay, as for the artifacts if you have the GPU overclocked drop it down slightly.

Hello, everyone. I was wondering someone could please give me some advice on what I should upgrade?

Budget: $1000 USD

I'll be using the PC for 1080p gaming on two 144hz monitors.(I use one for gaming, the other is for having other programs open) and school work.
Side note - I don't know if it's my GPU or another component, but I sometimes get artifacts in games followed by a lockup. All components are passed their warranty date.

Current build:

  • CPU
    Intel i5 4690k Devil's Canyon
  • Motherboard
    MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition
  • RAM
    16GB Avexir Core Series DDR3 - 2400
  • GPU
    EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti SC+ AXS 2.0+
  • Case
Phanteks Enthoo Pro Series - White
  • Storage
WD Caviar Blue 1 TB + OCZ ARC 100 120GB SSD
  • PSU
    EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 80+ Gold 750W
  • Cooling
    CRYORIG H7

$1000 is a lot, what were you looking to upgrade to performance wise? I think an i7 is very useful to you, used off eBay is a great value.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

If you have $1000 I would personally get a bunch of new parts, keep the cooler, PSU, GPU, case, and storage.

I forgot to mention that the GPU isn't overclocked, it's stock manufacturer settings.

Well, I just wanted to get more performance out gaming. For example, in AC:Odyssey I average around 50-55 frames. Sometimes it'll dip to the 40's even when I'm not playing on the highest settings.

What would be the best combo of parts to get for that budget? I was looking into the Ryzen 5 CPUs, but then I am told a used i7 is more than sufficient,

Have you tried using another display output or another cable?

I mean a used i7 wouldnt be bad, but that's probably going to be a quad core. A quad core isn't bad but I would suggest getting a ryzen 5 2600, good b450 or X470 motherboard, and then getting a Zen 2 CPU later in the year.

AC origins will like an i7, it helps to have more threads.

Not necessary, his current system is fine apart from maybe a CPU upgrade on the same platform.

Yes, I was using a 32 in. TV previously and I was getting artifacts. Less than 2 months ago, I bought 2 new ViewSonic XG2402 monitors and I sometimes get the artifacts from time to time.

Is the graphics driver up to date?

Yep. Also, I have a question. Would an i7 4770K or i7 4790K still hold up in a few years?

Okay have you tried a clean install of Windows?

An i7 4770K or 4790K should be fine for at least another 3-4 years.

I've tried new installation of windows, I've redownloaded windows multiple times from the Microsoft page. I've tried underclocking, I've tried increasing fan speed. Reverting to older drivers, but it happens from time to time.

If it's only from time to time then I would personally not worry about it, if it gets to a point where games are unplayable then start looking for a new GPU though for a stock 980Ti to start suffering from faulty VRAM is basically unheard of.

Thanks for the advice. I greatly appreciate it. I'll definitely stick with what I got and just upgrade the CPU.
