Computer just turned off twice

Go to solution Solved by Cupar19,

so i found out the problem , turns out the cable connecting the power supply to the mains was damaged

i was just using my computer, watching some youtube videos and doing my homework and then it just turned off. So i turned it back on and continued and then it happened again. I'm not entirely sure what it was. Any ideas after turning it back on checking cpu and gpu temps and nothing seems out of place.

Any other things to check?

Check all your power connections to PSU, mobo, GPU and CPU. This happened to me once due to a connection I knocked when inside my case once.

Nope not that, just happened again, im gwtting quite worried something is broke now, what else could it be?

How old is your PSU?  I have seen several PSUs become unstable as they got older (2-3 years).  Once the voltages start to fluctuate too much, you can reach moments where the PSU just doesn't deliver enough for the PC to continue functioning.  When that happens, the whole thing will abruptly turn off.

If you have access to another PSU, try plugging that one into your system and see if that stops the problem.  No need to completely put it in the case and cable manage it, just put it next to the case and connect the CPU power, 24-pin, the drives (or at least the boot drive) and the GPU.

i got it in 2017 april and its not like a constant issue, it happens randomly like somethimes 5 minutes until it happens and sometimes a couple of hours so another psu would be kind of hard to test, but ill try

If it's not overheating and shutting down without any BSOD or warning then I want to say its a power issue, but its been a while since I diagnosed any PC's.

Answer the following though and I might think of something or anyone else who browses this might.

Is this a selfbuild? if not what computer are you using?

What PSU are you running?

Have you recently installed any new tech on your computer over the last few days?

Do you hear any noises before it shuts down or immediately after, e.g crackling or pops?

Any weird smells?

yes self build

evga 650 watt 80 + bronze

no new tech for almost half a year

no noise

Alright then if its a self build your happy getting hands-on and nitty-gritty.

If I was you, and no one can post a solution in the next hour or two I would do the following steps.

1. Check and replug all the power connections, starting at the wall, going through the PSU, to every device in your computer.

2.If not fixed, unplug any unnecessary device, so that you are only running PSU, 1xRAM, Mobo, CPU, Primary HDD/SSD and GPU (If your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, if it does take your GPU out too.) If this solves it slowly add each component again till the issue returns.

3. If this still does not solve it, I would take everything out of the case and run it on a cardboard box with the absolute bare minimum attached in case it is getting short-circuited in the case somehow. If this fixes it, I would take everything I could out of the case, check for any metal shards etc and then put it back in.

4. Still no luck I would play with all the cables while it's powered up one by one to see if it turns off when a specific cable is being moved. If so this cable needs replaced.

5. Next I would attempt to test the PSU by asking a friend to borrow one of theirs if possible. Don't give yours to a friend to test on their rig in case its knacked and damages their machine.

5. Still no luck, I would be thinking CPU or Mobo.

You can test a PSU with a paperclip. See if it works, or if the fan doesn't turn on.

ok replugging didn't fix so im trying the spare psu i have lying around with the bare minimum right now

This is a bare minimum function test that is also used to power a water pump prior to initiating a water-cooled system. It does not test the PSU for stability.

Any sort of overclocks?

PSU may be going bad and causing system instability. Try unplugging GPU and running off your IGPU. If that makes it stable then your PSU is dying.

no overclocks and running a stress test for 10 minutes and still fine

That is incredibly helpful. Does HW monitor show any temps out of the ordinary for things like VRM's?

I am having a similar issue. My pc decides it wants to turn off at random times. The restarts can be hours apart or weeks apart, so testing each component would be extremely difficult.

Specs:

i7 8700k

Corsair RM750x

ASUS Prime Z370-P

2x8gb ballistix memory

Asus ROG 1080

500gb sasmsung nvme m.2 ssd

2 1tb barracudas, and 1 4tb barracuda.

Cooler master masterliquid 240 aio

This started randomly for me 5-6 months ago so I've already taken the whole thing apart and put it back together twice.

My temps are in check, and I built this pc about a year ago, so everything is pretty new.

I have noticed that it is more likely to happen when I'm streaming, but It can also happen while I'm sitting on the desktop.

Please help me smart people!
