Thanks!, I will probably go for the r5 2600 because of the upgrade path .

it'll be supported until 2020, so you'll be fine there

have fun and don't forget to mark it solved, and if you feel like it react to some comments (or all of them)

I already have an i3 6100, asus b150 motherboard, 16 gigs of ddr3 and an rx 470 4gb, gigabyte 500W power supply. I was thinking of upgrading the cpu as it is bottlenecking many modern games. I could buy the i5 9400f , which would need a new motherboard and ddr4 ram, or i could also get an i7 7700 on the existing motherboard (b150) and maybe an aftermarket cooler?(Both cost about the same for me - not including the 16 gig new ddr4 ram I would have to buy for the i5) Please suggest me what to do.

Are you 100% sure it's DDR3 you have? While it is possible for B150 boards to support DDR3 memory, they're not that common.

i7 7700 is too expensive, even when buying used.

If you want to spend $160 on a 6 core CPU without integrated graphics and you already need to buy a new motherboard and new RAM, then why not buy a Ryzen 2600 instead?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

Yes its ddr3 at 1600 Mhz (asus b150 pro gaming d3 mobo)

I thought about ryzen 2600, but it would need faster ddr4 ram(which is very expensive in India) , and I think it would need some amount of overclock to match the i5 9400 right (I only want to game on the pc)?

i7 7700 costs Rs. 25000 in india and the i5 combo costs roughly 24000 (I am considering a b360 mobo for that)

you don't NEED high speed ram. you can overclock 2400 mhz ram pretty good afaik. what would a r5 1600/2600 b450 combo cost you?

i5 9400f + b360 - about Rs. 24000

r5 2600 + b450 - about Rs. 25000

So roughly the same

then i would choose the 2600 personally, because you get smt (amd's hyperthreading), overclocking, a better stock cooler and a better upgrade path. what motherboard is it?

Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely consider buying the r5 2600 then. But should i consider the i7 7700 with the existing mobo and ram (which is slow ddr3 ram at 1600 mhz) as it costs roughly the same as both the r5 and i5 combo (without the ram) ?

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/3887vs3955

this is the 7700 on ddr4 against a r5 2600, you see the difference is quite notable, and with the price the 7700 goes for you, i wouldn't do it personally

How about https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B450-AORUS-ELITE-rev-10#kf

or https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/TUF-B450M-PRO-GAMING/

And will Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 8GB DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C16 be enough for the r5 2600?
