I have no experience building a computer.  I bought my daughter a nice pre built system and now I want back into PC gaming.  Only thing I've been playing on hers is CSGO and Unreal Tournament.

I have a 10 year old HP in the garage we don't do anything with.  After watching hours of LTT and other YT vids, I'd like to try and do something with it.

I'll post some pics and an ad for a decent Mobo/CPU/ram/GPU upgrade I was looking at.  Feel free to rip me apart if this is a waste of time.

You're not going to be able to do really any gaming with that PC. I would think even CSGO would have some trouble but I could be wrong.

If anything, maybe replace the 5770 with a GTX 1050. Phenom II is comparable to FX, minus the shared FPU so it's pretty ok at single threaded. What FPS can you get in CS:GO As of now with it?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Like I said, don't really know what I'm doing.  Was just kind messing around with the idea of it.  I don't even have a budget in mind.  I could probably do $300 to $350.

The idea was to see if I could reuse some old tech that was just sitting around.

How confident are you in terms of PC building? Nothing advanced just replacing etc.

For the best experience we probably need to scrap quite a bit.

You can get a very solid system for 250$.

Question: do you mind noise a lot?

I'm decently confident but that's got me in trouble before.  I'm pretty sure I can replace all the components.

Computer noise doesn't both me much.

For the build we will reuse the case, ram, and storage.

Look for a used CPU mobo combo for about 70-120$. What you are looking for is core i5 2nd through 4th gen. And core i7 2nd through 4th gen.

If you dont find a combo. Look for prebuilt systems with roughly the same specs though they will cost a little extra. Edit: watch out for systems using inverted layout.

Buy a new cx 550 (2017) PSU for 50$ (link provided).

Then look for a R9 290x for between 70-90$.

Finally buy a 20$ SSD to put your OS on. (Link provided)
