Hi guys,

So, you've probably seen a lot of these threads and I feel like I've read through most of them by now but still have not been able to solve my problem.

A couple of days ago I decided to upgrade my laptop from an almost broken HDD to an SSD.

I went through the well-documented process of setting up a bootable USB using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool and installed a fresh version of Windows 10 on my SSD with my HDD removed from the system.

Then, upon booting up from my SSD (with all other drives removed), my PC goes directly into UEFI and will not recognize my SSD as having a bootable windows installation.

Useful information

Laptop model:

Asus FX553VD

SSD model:

Toshiba Q300 240GB

UEFI or BIOS?

UEFI

GPT OR MBR?

DISKPART recognizes the SSD as GPT

The laptop has two SATA ports and Windows starts up just fine regardless of which one I plug my HDD into. Also, in Windows, my SSD is recognized as storage and is accessible.

What have I tried?

So far I've tried a load of things listed below:

  • Checking that the SSD is indeed recognized as system storage
  • Resettting my laptop's CMOS
  • Updating BIOS
  • Using the automatic startup repair tool, which was unable to repair my boot files
  • Disabling Secure Boot
  • Tried running the bootrec /FixBoot command which prompts an "Acces Denied" response
  • Tried running the bootrec /RebuildBCD command
  • Checking that an EFI-system partiton is present on the SSD
  • Plugging my SSD into either SATA port or into a USB-port with an adapter

Also, something I have noticed is that if I assign a drive letter to my SSD's EFI-partition in DISKPART, the letter will be gone upon restarting my laptop.

Basically, it feels like I've tried everything by now and I am at a loss for what to do next since googling the issue mainly brings up solutions that I've already tried. Please let me know if you need any information or screenshots or whatnot.

Any and all help/advice is appreciated ?

Thank you

I assume when you looked at the SSD connected as storage you could see all of the Windows root folders?

The way you describe it it sounds like the install went off without a hitch but it's just not booting.

If going to the boot menu (often F10 or F11) and forcing the selection of the SSD doesn't produce a result I would probably reinstall the OS but tryout Rufus instead of the Microsoft Official tool. Rufus is just a personal preference whenever I need a bootable thumb drive for anything.
