Does core/thread or base frequency which really matters

Hi all...

I am planning to get a new system by the middle of march. Now that the price of processors have dropped here in Malaysia, I'm started to get confused on which way to go? Do I go with CPU cores and thread ( like the Ryzen 2700X) or the base frequency (like Intel i7 7700K). BTW both prices nearly the same (Just add a 100 on the other chip)... Need Help?????

It depends what you're doing with the processor. If you're looking mostly for gaming, an Intel chip will probably be slightly faster. If you're looking to do content creation, rendering, streaming, or other heavy multi-threaded workloads a Ryzen would probably be better.

Just look at benchmarks for programs you'll be using on your CPU to accurately judge what CPU is better.

Base clock is something you can't compare from 1 CPU to another (that's like judging between two different cars by how much RPM the engine runs at). The cores can be important too, but that will depend on the program.

 

For example, gaming and Adobe programs prefer single core performance and thus will run better (generally) on Intel CPU's, while many other video editing programs or 3D modeling programs run better on many cores; making AMD the more viable solution.

 

Also, 2700X vs. 8700K is a much more fair comparison; seeing as the 8700K is a newer gen than the 7700K, has two more cores and better single core performance.

A friend of mine switched from an i7 6700K (the same as an i7 7700K) to a Ryzen 7 2700X and he notices a nice boost. His max framerate with the RTX 2060 in Battlefield V did not increase, but the averages have and now his system handles Twitch streaming while gaming a lot better. Choose the Ryzen over an older i7. Newer i7 or i9 are better.
