Msi Gaming X 1070 hitting 83C

Savage_Canadian96

That's pretty normal if its 100% utilization.  If you want, you can lower the voltage a little bit and lower the overclock (if it is) in msi afterburner, but you shouldnt need to if it isnt already overclocked.

Try using the PSU Tier List!

That's pretty terrible. My EVGA 1080s never went over 66C, my Gaming X 1080 Ti never hits that, and my Gaming 980 Ti 6G only got that hot in the summer. What case are you running it in and what kind of airflow do you have?

Full system specs? I've had my GPUs in an Enthoo Evolv ATX at one time or another and that's famous for bad airflow, though I did have 2x140 or 3x120mm fans in the front most of the time. Ran them with everything from an i5 2400 to X58 Xeons to a 2700X and they didn't get that hot.

That might be why, but 100% utilization could be a little lower if the fans are ramped up all the way

Thats not normal with the Gaming X card. This is a good card with a good cooler. I have the same card and never hit above 70c under full load.

No. Chances are you since you only have 1 intake fan, you have piss poor air flow and getting lots of stagnant air in your case.

Easy way to confirm the air flow is to take the side panel off and I bet you will see temps drop significantly while under load with the panel off.

It's not normal...I bought this same 1070 for a friend's build about a year ago and I tested it a fair bit and even with an overclock I was barely able to make it reach 70c and the fans were bellow 60% spwed....has the cooler been removed from the card?

not to my knowledge but i sent it into a local Repair shop while i was on vacation back during christmas holidays to have it cleaned out a bit. and Do you think it may be dying or maybe the Thermal paste on it is starting to go?

More than likely poor contact between the cooler and the GPU...maybe bad paste...card is not dying.

Grab some good, long lasting paste, take out the 4 to 6 screws on the back that hold the cooler and heatsink on the card and take it apart (being careful not to rip the fan connector off the card), clean the old paste off and apply new stuff. I guarantee you'll get a 10-15c drop.

Thank you should I also look at getting a new case or do you think that will hold this over for another 2 months or so? Im planning a new Build in the spring april or mayish.

I would also recommend replacing the thermal paste. That being said, I owned this card (before selling it off) and even with the stock paste, it never got to 83C (Typically 70-73). Changing paste helped to knock down temps a bit.

dump question , but happens to msi gaming cards alot,

are both fans spinning? (one fan may not work properly or very slow)

it used to throttle down at 79C in default
