Hello everyone!

I decided to create a topic right here to get the best advice from you guys in order to upgrade my PC Build. I've seen many videos for all the PC hardware but i really don't know if it's worth it and what would be the best plan.

Thanks in advance and please feel free to ask for further information,

Current Specs (attached some screens)
Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3
CPU
Intel Core i7-4820K (4 cores, 8 threads, Base clock 3.7 GHz, turbo 3.7 GHz (avg))
CPU Cooler

Corsair Hydro Series H60
SSD & Hard Drives
Samsung 850 Evo 500GB (Windows 10 64bit)

WD Blue 500GB (2010)
WD Red 3TB (2012)

RAM
Crucial BLS8G3D169DS3 1x8GB
GPU
Nvidia GTX 980 4GB Palit jetstream  (look attached screenshot)
Case
Fazn Titan II

1. Budget & Location

Greece, budget could be 700 euro.
Excluding: GPU & monitors.

2. Aim

I am a programmer so i mainly want my PC to run software programs at the same time etc. I do play PC games but gaming is secondary. I don't think i need a GPU right now but i would like to have the opportunity in the feature to upgrade it in case i want to boost the game performance. In my mind i would like to upgrade
* Motherboard (M.2 support)
* CPU (+ Cpu Cooler ?)

* RAM
* SSD m.2

3. Monitors

Not included in the upgrade.

4. Peripherals

Not included in the upgrade.

5. Why are you upgrading?

It all started because of my 1x8GB ram. I want to increase my RAM capacity but i was wondering if it's worth upgrading CPU + RAM + Motherboard than just buying a new 1x8GB DDR3 ram. I don't mind brands, i just need reliable components - CPU must be Intel.

A lot of games? Because if it's mostly for work, I might rather have a high core count Xeon instead.

@Jurrunio I think i am somewhere in the middle, would Xeon type be a minus for gaming? I play games on weekends but not everyday etc. Does CPU affect gaming that much? I thought GPU is main part

It depends on frequency when you have say, 6 cores. Different games have different CPU usage, but once your single core performance drops to a point, gaming performance will get worse.

I'm asking because you didnt seem to have overclocked the 4820k, this CPU could easily pull out 4.4GHz

Unfortunately i don't know much about overclocking (in matter of fact i didn't know "K" stands for overclockable CPU when i bought it years ago). I think i would prefer a gaming CPU because it will be enough for my work too - even now the 4820k is running very well for my work etc.

How much will buying another 8GB stick cost (or even 3 8gb stick since X79 supports quad channel and it might help in work)? Also check prices for 3930k, 3960x, 4930k, 4960x, Xeon E5 1620/1650/1680 and Xeon E5 1620/1650/1680 v2. These 6 and 8 core CPUs are all overclockable, sometimes cheap in the used market and a decent upgrade. I'm reluctant in recommending new CPUs because even in the German market, 700EUR is just enough for 8700k + decent board + 16gb of memory. If you step down the CPU and board to compensate for higher prices in Greece, the performance gain will be little compared to the expense.

do use the latest BIOS on this board btw, older BIOS has too lax of a power limit that it could overload the VRM without throttling.
