Possible new CPU

Hey guys,

so a local store is having a sale on hardware and I've been considering upgrading my CPU from a 4770k/16gb RAM to something else. 
I use my PC mostly for games, but I also like to stream. This provides a large issue when playing CPU intensive games. 

I'm a little out of date on CPUs, but last I asked a r7 2700x was recommended.
Just wanting to see if that changed and if anything else has really changed.
At this point in time what (I think?) is the top intel i7 is like 50$ more than a 2700x, but I'm not sure how they compare in real world performance.

I'd appreciate any input you can give! :^)

A 2700x is great for streaming and gaming, 8 cores + SMT so you've got 16 threads, great stream quality.

Post calculation I do believe it's a difference of <100$ CAD.
I lied, it's about 100 CAD. 

That's using PCpartpicker though, and I'm waiting for thje sale that starts thursday night at the local store.

choosing amd also warrant you future upgradability at least to 3000 series, 4000 if were lucky.

I would wait until Ryzen 3000 launches, since it should (hopefully) be launching soon.

Very true. 
Personally I'm not leaning either way, just looking for what would be the best deal.

AM4 will be usable till 2020, amd promised.

Will we see the 4th gen in 2020, i'm not sure.

But for sure, you need the new chipset x570 if you want to use this year Ryzen with more than 8 cores.

Who said the next Ryzens with more than 8 cores will need the new chipset? I don't think AMD disclosed that yet.

That's not a $100 difference, it's a $250 difference.

That's more like the $100 difference.

But in that case, a decent Ryzen board $250, decent Intel board almost $100 less.

Right. I skipped the "top i7" part.

The top i7 part (i7 9700K) is a bad choice to go, the previous i7 was better (more threads).

Funnily enough I didn't actually know about the 9700k until after I made this thread haha.
I was looking at the 8700k.

If it's the i7 8700K vs the Ryzen 7 2700(x), you're choosing either higher ingame performance or better stream performance.

What I mean, the i7 gets you more fps and smoother frame times while the R7 has more threads which lets it utilize more threads for the stream.

Really both are probably far more powerful than what I have now. So really it's what the prices are on the sale I'll be looking at etc.

Actually, they aren't that more powerful. The 8700K is like an i7 4770 having two more cores and some 10% more performance per core. The Ryzen 7 is like having two 4770K that sometimes work well but usually one of the 4770K-s decides it's not needed (talking about the cases where more cores provide no benefits, like most single player games).

Ah I see. Maybe it's not worth the money then. Depends how good the sale is I guess.

$500 for the CPU, $250 motherboard and $250 RAM; $1000 isn't a small sum.

For that money, I'd buy a second system, combine the parts of the two to have a main RIG and a dedicated streaming PC. Play on one system, the second one for the encoding and handling of the stream.

 

We don't exactly know anything about the rest of your system, like your GPU, storage, PSU...

Ok, it's not $1000 like it would be here, but it's $800+ so still a lot.

 

Now, try building a whole system with a weak graphics card and only the basic parts for those $800.

Using that as a streaming PC would offer you far better performance than streaming on a single system with an i7 8700K.

 

Now go for an $800 PC that has a stronger CPU than your i7 4770K and imagine taking that CPU to your main rig while using the old i7 for the stream rig.

The dedicated streaming PC does not need to have a strong GPU and the CPU should be a quad core or better (since the CPU does all the work).

Don't forget you need DDR4 ram. Try and find a store that's willing to do a trade in of a sort.

I have no desire to have 2 pcs. running in such close proximity to each other just to stream.
I'm not a full time streamer, if I got more into it that would definitely be something considerable. As it is I'd rather just have one powerful PC. 
As much as I like (and at times hate) tinkering with tech, I don't have the time to do that kind of tinkering.

I don't actually have enough electrical outlets to support 2 pcs haha

Already factored in. I have a proposed use for the old components already as it is if I continue forward with an upgrade.

Yall are forgetting this is based entirely on a sale at a local shop.
I just wanted to know the pros and cons of each path in case the prices are low enough for me to consider it.

RN what i've got is AMD route is better if you do things that apply to multicore utility ( as it always has I guess) and intel is still better for single core stuff.
However what's the difference between the 8700 and 9700 or w/e. They use the same socket and are both i7's, so does one just have more cores with the same kinda power etc\

The i7 8700K has 6 cores and HyperThreading which makes it a 12 threads CPU.

The i7 9700K has 8 cores but HyperTreading has been disabled so it's an 8 threads CPU.

The i5-s are still 6 cores without hyperthreading. Now only the i9 has HyperThreading.

In other words, the i7 8700K is a better choice for heavy multithreaded applications where it's better to have 12 averagely weaker threads, the i7 9700K is better for the scenarios where you don't need more than 8 threads and it's far better than the old i7-s which had 4 cores with HT although they also have 8 threads.

Hyperthreading [virtual cores] does not provide the same benefits as actual cores.
