Planning a Gaming Laptop "One Wire" Rig

xboxnissan1

Hi,

I would like to ask you guys about a build I'd like to have, here it is:
1) Laptop with at least :

  • at least i5 (preferably i7). I game but use it as a workstation for development and vms
  • 17.3" and 1080p (mostly for battery life, compared to 4k. I know about the tradeofs of 144hz), Also if you have option for: 120-144hz
  • At least a SSD drive (SSD by itself or SSD-HDD combo)
  • Slim design

(I saw the Razer Blade Pro 17 and ROG Strix Scar matching all of this, for example)

2) Monitor with (144hz) IPS display, 27" 1440p.

(MG279Q, XF270HU, AD27QD)

3) Last but not least, I want a One-Wire setup: the whole reason I'm asking: a compatible to #1 dongle for charging, 1440p (and 120-144hz) via display port, ethernet and at least two usb 3.X ports plugging with one wire to the laptop.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I have an Alienware 17 that I bought before I decided to go with a tower I built. I have a graphics amplifier that turned it into a one wire set up. It all worked great, unfortunately now it sits in the corner doing nothing lol, but it had a good life for the 2 months I used it. It was a 8700 with ssd and a 1070 in it

So your top priority is a type c thunderbolt port?

It's to allow charging over thunderport the laptop, allow 1440p144hz over display port and some usb for keyboard/mouse.

Thinking about it, 144hz might be too much. As I play mobas and don't mind new games in lower res, I'd go around 2060 if possible with/without 144hz. Price range should match the 2060. Screens seemed around 500-700 and dock is ??? to me (allow charge, 1440p with/without 144hz).

I think it's a preferable idea indeed, I was just wondering what people could propose also. I'm almost positive it would be less expensive to get a cheaper laptop with a full-fledged upgradable desktop, but wanted to see what people think :)

I'd go with the Razer Blade Pro or HP Omen 17 off that list if I had the funds. Right now my budget is forcing me toward the Acer Nitro 5 (2018) 15.6" with 1050ti for $790.  I think it has type C port but i dunno if its thunderbolt 3 enabled, i doubt it.
