Very inconsistent internet speed

I got a question regarding my internet and why it is so damn inconsistent. Right now I cant even log into league of legends, and when I test my internet speed on fast.com it is around 70Kbps, but if I hop on youtube, I can watch a 1080p video without any problems. Does anybody know what could be happening?

Also, who is your provider?

I work for an ISP, so i may be able to test some stuff from my end

weird thing, when Im just using the internet I cant load speedtest.net by ookla, but when I turn on my vpn it loads just fine and I get 7-8 Mb/s. Could I be throttled depending on what services Im trying to use?

How many other people are you sharing with? DSL on the high end is only barely capable of doing 100 Mb/s in very rare occasions(VDSL2+ Bonded)  and more likely only capable of 6-20 Mb/s (ADSL2+/ ADSL2+ Bonded)

It would be normal that speeds would go all over the place if there is a lot of people on either, even 100mbps can be saturated by one guy downloading a steam game.

Im assuming that it would be the whole building, but wouldn't that then apply to every application? Im not sure why I can watch a 1080p video perfectly fine, while at the same time my league client doesn't even load

1080p video is a bit different than something like league, you can play league with 512kbps if you are the only one online and you aren't doing anything in the background, better than someone who is getting 1000Mbps but they have 20 people playing minecraft.

This could be due to router constraints, and if i'm not mistaken these modems can only process so many clients requests at the same time so you may get put on some kind of 'waiting list' while it waits to process your requests.

Do you have the option to get your own line for the dorm?

getting my regular speed on speetest.net, but absolutely nothing on steam/league of legends

This does look like someone has these applications set to super low priority, what kind of VPN do you have? because there is a good chance nothing we do in this regard will make games like league or steam games playable.

You may be able to get away with games that use 3rd party servers though.

It also looks like the university owns that IP, which means there is a good chance that they have their own private network just for the campus.

Do you have access to a modem?

Yeah that's probably the case then, ISP's can throttle traffic based off the source, i bet this is probably the case
