Server NAS

Good afternoon all!

 

I've been looking into building a server NAS. This is something I've never done but I think it might be the best solution to my problems. I have heard that getting a used or refurbished server and converting it into NAS is a good solution. I have looked around at some different hardware, but not too sure what would be best for this. 

 

Goal:

 

Setup a full server solution for NAS and maybe possible game hosting. (Would love some flexibility) 

Preferably under $1,000 for everything

 

 

Needed Parts (Or at least I think need

 

Server rack (Preferably with a door and lock)

OS (Prefer with GUI)

Server

Hard Drives (At least 4TB in Raid, maybe Raid 1 or 5? I do prefer WD) 

SSD Cache Drive (Keep transfer speeds high)

Switch that fits on server rack

Rack mount power strip

Remote access to server once it's setup

There is literally no reason why you'd need to get server-hardware. A regular, used desktop is just as fine, and may be easier to get, too.

Take a look at my signature below I built mine out of a prebuilt and its rock solid as a NAS/HTPC-Plex/VM's and by the way server racks are retarded expensive!
