Correct CPU for GTX 690

Hey All,

Hopefully I am not going to get scolded too badly for this one but I've recently purchased myself an nVidia GTX 690 and I absolutely freaking love the look of this card! I am having some trouble in figuring out what CPU is going to "not bottleneck" this GPU. Currently, I am running it with an AMD Phenom II X6 1045T @ 2.70 GHz however it is in a rather generic and bad quality motherboard (Asrock N68-S3 UCC) and I was wondering should I spend the money and upgrade to an i5 8400 with the Gigabyte B360M HD3 Motherboard & 32GB RAM (which I know is going to be overkill) or should I just stick with this CPU and just upgrade to a decent mobo for it ? (eg MSI 990FXA).

Please be gentle guys! I can't help my obsession with these old cards! Would love to get 100% out of it though! Thanks!

thats a  6 core cpu so i doubt youll be bottlenecking,im not even going to ask why you bought that gpu but to each there own lol, personally i would upgrade to an i7-6700k or better and a decent mobo, ram isnt all that important other than amount 32gb is overkill if your only gaming, but i use that also so cant say much lol,i would just go the cheapest route to performace ratio, that cpu you have was more for workload than gaming, any intel cpu you pick from 6700 and up will be one heck of a performance boost for you especially in games.

8400 is an overkill for that video card, so I guess you can go with it. Although Ryzen would be cheaper and you wouldn't notice a difference, since your video card would be the limiting factor

Ex-EX build: Liquidfy C+... R.I.P.

Ex-build:

Meshify C – sold

Ryzen 5 1600x @4.0 GHz/1.4V – sold

Gigabyte X370 Aorus Gaming K7 – sold

Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 GB @3200 Mhz – sold

Alpenfoehn Brocken 3 Black Edition – it's somewhere

Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse – ded

Intel SSD 660p 1TB – sold

be Quiet! Straight Power 11 750w – sold

I would also suggest you get a Ryzen 2600(x) and a B450 Board, it's cheaper and has the same performance (especially with a 690). And then maybe get 16gb of faster ram, then you can upgrade later if you really want to

AMD Phenom II X6 1045T is probably too weak for this card. I probably would go with a ryzen processor, but since you are interested in old gpus, you could also try pairing it with cpus of the similar time period like a i7 3770k or 2600k or 2700k

Damn....

Hey BlockedTheShot... Thanks for your recommendations. I also have a spare i5-2500 @ 3.3 GHz (not 2500K) laying here that I could buy a decent motherboard for. Not sure whether or not that would only be a tiny step up from what I'm currently running but I'm almost tempted to spend the money and go for the i5-8400. That way when I can afford to upgrade my GPU, Bottlenecking shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Also, Not really obsessed with old GPU's as such. I had only recently sold my last gaming PC (G4560 + 1050Ti) and was not going to build another one so soon and when I got given a new PC case I didn't want to leave it empty haha. So with the parts I had laying around the house, I built what you see now only with a Gigabyte GTX 260 OC installed, So when one of my colleagues offered me a GTX 690 for only $50 AUD, I jumped at the chance. Now I just want it to run at 100% haha. This rig is only mainly for last gen titles like Crysis (Original, 2 & 3) most importantly, Some World of Warcraft & Eve Online.

A Ryzen 3 1200 would be just fine with that GPU.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello again everyone!

So I've just upgraded my system with an ASRock Z77 Fatality Performance & i5-2500. Paired with the GTX 690 I am now receiving the FPS that I was hoping for in the beginning. This GPU is still so impressive! I love it. Only thing I need for this system now is to max out the RAM. Going to Hawaii next week (Australia is Home) so hopefully, I can pick up some cheap DDR3 somewhere, Bestbuy seems to have some decent corsair ddr3 in stock. Screenshot attached to show Unigine Valley bench performance.

ALSO... I was hoping you could enlighten me as to what utility it is that Linus uses in his videos to monitor the temperatures of new cooling software. I've started work on a REALLY old system (i3-530 @ 2.93Ghz & 9600 GT) of mine and the GPU seems to be running really hot which does not surprise me but I'd like to find out if it is going to stabilize at a certain temp or just keep rising! I would like to run 2 of these cards in SLI  eventually (partially for nostalgia reasons but mostly for my daughters "Roblox" pc haha). Thanks very much! I have also included a screenshot of the 9600 GT running the Unigine Valley Benchmark haha!

Are you sure you ant to do that?seems a bit overkill and for me roblox is more cpu and ram intensive as my c2q q6600 and r7 240 gets away with good framerates as long as you have good wifi
