Compiling Blender from source

martward

Hi all,

I have never compiled anything on Windows as far as I remember, and it has been about as much fun as I expected it to be. So I need to compile blender myself since the regular installer of 2.79 doesn't install a version that I can use with my new RTX 2060. I managed to finally have it compile, but when it finally finished I couldn't find a way to actually launch it. (Then I accidentally hit a wrong file and now it's compiling all over again but oh well..)

Can anyone tell me how I can now actually run it (when it's finished compiling again)?

Thanks

I don't think that RTX cards are supported yet, they added support for the latest gens of gpus with the next big update, in this case i guess 2.8

EDIT: some evidence: https://devtalk.blender.org/t/rtx-gpu-support/2306/20

So the one that you just download and install doesn't work with RTX cards, but they did update the source code so you can download it and compile it yourself. I did this, but I just have no option to open blender as far as I can see. As in there is not blender.exe somewhere I would expect a blender.exe to be.

Yeah so I managed to find the executable. It's blender 2.8 for some reason (no idea why you'd download a Beta by default but sure) and for some reason it doesn't recognize my gpu.

I got my info from this link:

https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/119837/how-can-one-do-rendering-with-cycles-using-an-nvidia-rtx-gpu

but unfortunately it doesn't work for me.

Well, fools me for being impatient. They updated the installer today and it now supports RTX cards. Not sure if this is the same one as the home screen but if you download it from this page it works... ?
