PC is freezing

Go to solution Solved by qwertywarrior,

Here's the results. Temperatures seems to be fine.

Well I guess it's HDD then? Image looks like this because I'm using dual monitors. 4:3 and 16:9.

Edit: Here's temperatures while testing with prime95. Max temperature achieved was 65. Which isn't really super high.

Shortly after this testing and doing other stuff, like after 3 minutes, PC froze.  Well it usually freezes after 20 min of use, so I don't think it froze now because of this testing.

if u have another hard disk use it

if u dont

get a 4GB usb stick and install ubuntu on it  (just to be sure that the hard drive is the culprit )

turn off pc

remove sata cable from the hard drive

boot up from the USB and use the pc for 30+ min see if u get any more freezes

Hello.

PC is freezing on startup or on a hard use of it, like multitasking with chrome, adding files to USB flash and etc at the same time.

I wonder what could it be, I don't know why but I think it's CPU. Recently I played a match in League of Legends, after the match, client took me to the launcher application, my PC just froze, couldn't move my cursor or do anything, and this freezing happens very often. While playing video games / using different software and etc.

PC Specs:

CPU: AMD ATHLON X2 6000+

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 220 GT OC

RAM: ADATA 2 GB 800 MHz ram ( 2 Sticks ).

Motherboard: MSI Neo V3.

Bonus question:

I can't play games normally, as an example let's take Battlefield: Bad company 2. My GPU handles 1080p of it very well.

I haven't checked the framerate but it's more than 30 I think on medium/highest settings. But I experience constant lagg, it's not a GPU frame drop, it's just a lag, a mini freeze. As an example let's take it like this: 40 fps - 40 fps - 0 fps - 40 fps - 0 fps and etc. It just lags. I inserted that gpu to a test bench, with better cpu and ram. Game runs like a charm, I thought maybe it's ram, but it's not, I changed them recently. Is it possible that CPU is doing this?

When was the last itme you reinstalled windows?

What is your cpu usage in game?

Reinstalled it yesterday, full reinstall, with full HDD format.

Well it's 100%. But I think all games run on 100%. Well at least on my other test bench with AMD ATHLON II X2 250 3.0 GHZ and 5 GB of DDR3 ram. It runs TF2 on highest without AA at 50 fps. And that X2 250 works at 100%.

Test your hard drive

Test your ram

Stress test your CPU

See what gives results. It's basically going to be a process of elimination to see what happens

Are you sure about that? Have you read that bonus question? Because games are ,, Freezing/ Lagging " too.

Hard drive failure can cause all of that.

yes types of hard drive failures can cause freezes in games

Constant small freezes? And is it possible to make an external HDD bootable? Because that would be easier to me.

And for the previous replies, I changed RAM sticks few days ago, so they're completely fresh.

Edit: I'll just replace it with my other HDD which is in my test bench.

If that won't improve anything it means it's CPU then.

ok good

i really doubt its the cpu

if the cpu is dying it would crash not freeze

are any of your components overheating ?

including northbridge and southbridge

Haven't checked heat values, but all fans are working, GPU/CPU/PSU.

Well I've got a few BSOD's too, does that count as crashing?

bsod is a crash :)

even if fans are working  that still doesnt mean its all cool

maybe the thermalpaste has dried out

download this

http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

and see if something is over heating

if nothing is over heating

download and run prime95 and see if anything fails or something overheating

I'm going to try that out.

By the way, I tried running Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on external samsung HDD.

It lagged the same way, well it could actually be that thermal paste has dried out, because it's been 3 years since processor and thermal paste was changed.

Yes, just check your BIOS and ensure you can boot from the USB HDD. You may have to enable it or change the boot order around, unless you know the key to hit to bring up the boot menu when you power on.

Yeah I installed windows via USB, but I meant if I can boot windows from it.

Because I never tried that. But I think I tried to install windows to it, it said that I can't, because it's an external device.

I got an old 40 GB Hard drive from a friend, well it fixed that crashing problem. It does not crash anymore.

But games are still lagging, big frame drops usually. I think it's CPU. I haven't messed with bios to try and boost it.

But mainly changing Hard Drive fixed this. Big thanks. :)

did u ever have these framedrops before ?

if no then go to the bios and use "default configuration"

i think i know why you are getting framedrops

when BF3 was first released  i started having odd framedrops after a few minutes

it turns out the game was using my hard drive as RAM because 4GB wasnt enough ( was playing at high settings) (50FPS to 5FPS)

after adding an extra 4GB it was fast again

check how much ram is left after starting the game

also take a look at the hard drive LED indicator if its going insane when playing then ull know its using the harddrive as RAM
