Strange CPU temps

Hi guys,

 

I currently have a i7 8700K and a "be quiet! - Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler" in my system.

 

My temps at idle are around 50C which I believe is a bit high. I would just like to know if this high or am I worrying about nothing?

Welcome to the forums Yosty! :D That's a bit warmish, nothing to be concerned. What are the temps when under full load?

What are the temps under aida64?

Thank you very much :) Under load it hits 75-80 gets no higher.

On a dark rock pro 4, you would only see those temps overclocked. What's your OC?

That would be stock clocks, which seems to indicate something is not quite right. While 80 celsius as a max load temp is safe, I have overclocked a 10 core i9 on a drp4

All cores are around 65-80C under aida64 however cores jump up and down temps 10C+ every second.

Would this suggest me not mounting the CPU Cooler correctly? or would anything else play into this?

It's at stock which does indicate that maybe the thermal paste was applied wrong or something idk, but it won't harm your CPU it'll just keep it at stock and it can't oc

That would be my first guess. Coffee lake systems are too young for a dried thermal paste.

Way to hot for that CPU cooler.  You likely do not have it mounted correctly, or the thermal paste isn't correct or a combination of both. @Yosty

You should be idling in the low to mid 30c and hitting max 70c on that CPU cooler just understanding how things work (but having no experience with those two items in tandem)

A good go to is Arctix MX-4, cheapish and effective. Although maybe some tightening is all you need, the stock paste would have been sufficient.

The idle temp of 50c is no good.  Something is off...….  I would personally take out cpu clean thermal paste on it and the HS and apply paste again and make sure you properly tighten the cooler.  We don't want you to chip the motherboard but make sure its tight,,,,   50c idle is suspect....

I blame global warming. CPU-Z said my cpu was 36297c the other day. So, sorry if we all explode in a firey death as my processor terraforms the earth into a star.

What motherboard are you using? Are you using default motherboard settings?

What are ambient temps?  Have you tried reseating the cooler?

Update - I was stupid and unplugged my my back case fan when I was reseating something in my PC. I did reseat my CPU cooler anyway as I had bought the stuff, now getting 30-35 at idle and 65-70 at full load.

Open Task Manager, sort the CPU to the highest usage, see if there is a sneaky program/application is running which raise the CPU usage while you are doing nothing as you might think it is idle, but actually it's not.. and end the task.. Otherwise you have to do something more..
