I've decided I'm going to ride out my FX 8350 for another year and a half or so until Ryzen 3000 releases and settles, until then I should really upgrade my oddly matched 8+2GB of RAM and my 1050ti.

But first, RAM.

My motherboard only has 2 slots, so the easiest path I can see is adding a 2nd 8GB stick.

I know AMD memory compatibility was shaky (to say the least) in FX days so I checked my motherboard data sheet and found that there is only ONE SINGLE 8GB stick on the QVL.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-870A-USB3L-rev-31#ov

That stick being a Samsung M378B1G73AHO

Back when I built this system, I ordered that exact model number from eBay (ow my wallet), installed it, it worked and I didn't notice until recently that I actually received a M378B1G73QH0 , the only difference being the 3rd last letter.

I just went to order a matching stick (of what's photoed above) and the cheapest thing I can find is $92 with shipping here in Canada. If I order the exact one in the QVL it's $80, but there are other M378B1G73xxx 12800U 8GB chips for ~50-60.

I guess my final question is; can I order one of the misc cheaper M378B1G73xxx 12800U and have it pair fine with the one that I'm using currently?

Thanks :)

i have thrown all kinds of DDR3 at my FX system while i had it and nothing was ever a problem, its probably fine whatever you decide to get. feels like a waste to upgrade the RAM if you are getting rid of it soon though

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

My gf got my old core2quad Q6600 and she's been starting to feel its age, she just plays sims 4 and flash games though so I'm sure she'll be fine with my 8350, I'd like to pass on the 16GB of ram to her when I do the upgrade to ryzen though so I can set-and-forget her system like I've done to the C2Q up until this point lol.

I've got 8GB on her Q6600 atm and she's a tab hogger so she feels the crunch already.

sure, then it makes sense. if you want to set and forget it maybe go for a matched stick to what you have just to make sure
